A happening really happened at Mack b
May 12th, 2008 by Justin Richards in NewsIn full disclosure, I usually don’t listen to experimental music, and I didn’t go to many art shows before I moved to Sarasota. However, I’ve been to a lot in the past few months, and I know when I am bored (often) and when I am having fun (sometimes).
Experimental music trio Tripod, whose members are mainstays of Sarasota karaoke, played a double-header gallery opening at Mack b last Saturday. From the corner of the vast converted warehouse, Tripod broadcast eerie drones and weird slow melodies through huge bass cabinets donated by former CL feature John Lichtenstein, a.k.a. Skiffle.
To this backdrop, we checked out the point-grid paintings of Cindy Mason and the spacey chrome-creatures made by sculptor John Mack (no association with the venue). The highlight was a huge conical fixture by Mack, set in the wall, the center of which held a tiny screen showing NASA footage of the sun.
