Mmmm, beer
May 21st, 2008 by Jonathan Maziarz in Editor's Desk, News, Politics, SportsThis morning, we are going to start off with a little quiz about bad beer. I scored 80 percent, proving that my college years were not wasted.
• Sticking with the alcohol theme, it appears that more and more young people are celebrating their 21st birthday with 21 alcoholic beverages, with predicatable results.
• I am originally from the Philadelphia area and am a life-long Philly sports fan. When the Flyers were eliminated from the playoffs last week, Sports Illustrated was good enough to point out that it has now been 100 cumulative seasons of futility for the Flyers, Eagles, Phillies and Sixers since the city last won a championship (the 1983 Sixers).
SI celebrated by counting down the top-100 moments in Philly sports futility, but I disagree with the choice for number 1. There is no way that Mitch Williams’ gopherball to Joe Carter in the 1993 World Series wasn’t the worst momemt of the bunch. I was living abroad at the time, listening to the Series on Voice of America out of Nicaragua and it was just painful. I just watched the video for the first time ever and the moment still gives me chills.
• And lest you think I’ve abandoned politics altogether, here’s some real straight talk about John McCain, from the man himself. Maverick? I don’t think so. Clueless? Most certainly.
