It’s not that I just disagree with the Grammy’s. I can appreciate the Nobel Prize for Literature even if don’t want to read the award-winning books. Because they mean something. The prize seems to value a particular set of sensibilities and traditions. When you pick up an award-winning book, you can have a rough idea of what sensibilities are at play.

The Grammys, much like Vh1, are just obsolete. I have no idea what sensibilities might be at play – remember when Steely Dan won album of the year? Cultural significance, success, trendiness, hype all seem to be meaningless variables.

And they’re usually just wrong. Look at the best new artist awards – so many of those artists are terrible, and faded out quickly. Certain genres are completely overlooked.

I’m pretty sure that a Grammy-winner sticker on an album cover would make very few people more likely to pick it up, and that means the Grammy’s are failing.
