Ethiopian cuisine comes to Bradenton at Bonni Bakes

April 15th, 2009 by Brian Ries in Food and Drink

When I saw this great story by Marsha Fottler in the Herald, I rubbed my eyes in disbelief. With two recently opened Ethiopian restaurants in Tampa (Queen of Sheba and Abol Bunna) and now a semi-regular spot for Ethiopian in Bradenton, it looks like the Suncoast is breaking free from its moribund ethnic food tropes!

Stephanie Peterson hosts Ethiopian dinners at Bradenton Village of the Arts spot Bonni Bakes (930 12th Street West, Bradenton, 746-6647) every Tuesday night, with a complete meal running just $15 plus tax and tip (cash only).

I might still wish for an actual Ethiopian restaurant, but these occasional nights suit an African cuisine that is essentially concerned with hearty home-cooking. You’ll soon be sopping up decadent spiced and stewed veggies and meat with tart injera weekly alongside other folks who love an ethnic cuisine that is rarely seen in these parts. Like me.

Read the complete menu after the break:

A large platter covered with injera (sourdough sponge like bread) will be placed in the middle of the table and on it will be:

zigni alich’a (mild beef stew) beef, onions, butter, ginger, cardamom, garlic

doro we’t
(chicken stew spicy) chicken, onions, bebere (red pepper spice) butter, hard boiled eggs, on the side yogurt

ye’abesha gomen (mustard greens) mustard greens, onions, green pepper, ginger, garlic, butter

ye’atakilt alich’a (vegetable stew) cauliflower, carrots, onions, green pepper, tomato, ginger, garlic, tumeric

yeshiro (chick pea sauce)

ayib (spiced cottage cheese)

injera is served also on the side for dipping up the food…no forks, knives or spoons!

VEGETARIAN PLATTERS AVAILABLE ON REQUEST

Drinks
bunna(coffee spiced with cloves, cinnamon)

tea with cardamom

birz (honey soda drink)

coke, sprite, diet coke

BRING YOUR OWN BEER OR WINE (no corkage charge)

These dinners sell-out quickly, try to make your reservations early.
