Summer of Pig reader recipe: White Trash Ham by J. Martin

June 5th, 2009 by Brian Ries in Food and Drink

(Editor’s Note: This style of cooking ham is a Southern tradition — although I personally prefer Dr. Pepper over Coke. And check out the rest of CL’s Summer of Pig coverage.)

White Trash Ham

1 ham, any cut
1 liter of root beer or Coca-Cola
1 or more onions

Boil ham in root beer (preferred choice) with onion for 90 minutes. Take out and, if desired, make glaze with 1 tablespoon dried mustard, 1 cup brown sugar and a splash of the root beer to make a paste. Slather over ham and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Exact times and amounts vary according to size of ham.

Wayyyyy gooooood! Juicy and syrupy-easy and delicious!
