The Scenestress returns to Drag Queen Bingo and checks out Sarasota’s new gay bar, The Alley
June 9th, 2009 by The Scenestress in Arts, Film, Food and Drink, Music, News, Sarasota-Manatee, SportsTUESDAY, JUNE 2 — DRAG QUEEN BINGO, HORSEFEATHERS/THE ALLEY, SARASOTA
I took a group of first-timers down to Horsefeathers on Tuesday so they could experience the wackiness (which I’ve covered here before) that is DQB firsthand, but upon arrival I was initially disappointed when I realized that my BFF Xuxu was not “workin’” that night. By the time the new girls called a few numbers though, I was happily enthralled by Marsha Mallow and the very pretty—and very limber—Felicity (by the way, don’t worry, XuXu will be back).
Bingo was a raunchy and raucous blast, as always, and the boys at Horsefeathers took very good care of us (thank you Jamie and Tom for the last-minute table and Josh behind the bar for the fab martinis). The highlight of the evening was the first time that magic number was called: “O-69.”
Everyone screamed as the bass line of “Boom Boom Pow” banged out the speakers, servers with trays of Jell-O shots surged through the room, and Felicity showed off her moves on the bar top, including a full split. Get it girl!
Obvi, the fun was not over after DQB adjourned. Most in the house moved north to The Alley, the new gay hot-spot in Sarasota, for karaoke night. The space across from Ringling College is a little underwhelming at first blush, but while the décor leaves something to desired (it feels a bit like being inside a cardboard box painted black), with this group even an insurance seminar would be fun.
And I did end up liking The Alley. There’s less attitude in the air than at the bar’s main competitor, Witness Café, and it’s always free to get in. Plus, I must say, the gays know how to do karaoke — it’s a bit like American Idol in there with everything from William Hung-esque performances to some queen’s best Kelly Clarkson. Bitch was good.
We all took turns at the mic playing diva till last call when the sing-along migrated to the house and continued until the wee hours. If you want the sordid details of the after-hours party, well, you’ll have to join up online cause that ain’t fit to print. There may be somethin’ to this Twitter shit after all.
