2009 Drinking Guide: Tell us your favorite under-recognized Sarasota bar

June 15th, 2009 by Cooper Levey-Baker in News

So you’ve drunk your way around the world at Shakespeare’s, chillaxed upstairs at The Gator Club, downed the allowed dosage of mai tais at the Bahi Hut… but which bar do you love to hang at when prying eyes aren’t on you? For Creative Loafing’s 2009 Drinking Guide, we’re exploring the world of alcohol consumption away from the bright lights of Sarasota’s major drinking destinations, and we want you to join in the fun: Follow us on Facebook, Twitter or MySpace to find out where we’re going when.

But we also need your help. We want to know your favorite jukebox joint, dirt-floor dive or diamond-in-the-rough hideaway. Comment below, and we just might add your fav flop to our list of destinations!

Legends on Osprey near Hillview, is by far the best bar in SRQ! Cold beer, friendly faced Christian behind the bar who always fills your glass 5 minutes before you ask him! You can watch any game, play pool and great tunes too! I have never gone there and not had an awesome time!

  2. Annah Says:

There is a New BaddaBings that just opened on University and Lockwood. It is huge! Its a great mix of the Sarasota Bings and the Bradenton Bings. Gina the manager/owner is a sweetheart, and Shannon is a great bartender. Every time I go in there its like going home, they remember what I drink and who I am. All the regulars are friendly.

  3. Elise Says:

So glad you are doing this. I give two huge enthusiastic thumbs up for the Shamrock Pub! 80 Brews and 50 under $5!!!!

  4. Jim Says:

Shamrock Pub on Ringling. Amazing beer selection and great people at and behind the bar. Don’t let it’s former reputation and location fool you! Derek, the new owner, has done an amazing job with the place winning over new patrons and brining in live music.

  5. Anna Norman Says:

    Tavern 57 on 17th & Lockwood Ridge.

  6. JP Says:

Super Trooper fans will appreciate this place:

    Shenanigans on Beneva

  7. Susan Wallach Says:

Shenanigan’s became a private Veteran affiliated club recently and one must now be a member to imbibe there.

  8. Paul Player Says:

Memories on North 41. Great no-frills place to hang but Enter At Your Own Risk!

  9. Megan Says:

Tap & Cork Wine Bar on Venice Island. They also keep around 50 different beers in stock, and I don’t have to drive to Sarasota.

  10. TimTam Says:

Tink’s Tavern, on State Road 70 just east of 301.

It was described to me as a “knife and gun” bar, but I have never seen any of that.

    Sylvia’s the bartender of choice.

Second the Legends call. Now with more flat-screen space than bar space.

You could a mini-pub crawl at the Beneva/Webber intersection. 8Ball Lounge has a weird rep and been around forever. Entersection has 25-cent wings on Wednesdays. TKatz has a surprising beer selection. Champions shows all the euro soccer matches (AKA reason to drink really early).

  12. Casey Says:

Flanagan’s on US41 in Venice… totally dirty hole in the wall, with $1.50 drafts all the time!
    AND
    Cock & Bull! (on Cattlemen)

  13. RJohnson Says:

It’s Tinks Lounge on SR 70- anyplace with the word lounge in its address has to be given its due

  14. TimTam Says:

Quite, I stand corrected. Tink’s Lounge it is.

  15. Alec Says:

Drift-In on Bridge Street, Bradenton Beach — call there for entertainment, Fri/Sat night music (cheesy but fun), and Sun night karoake 778-9088

  16. Alec Says:

Also, In-Cahoots on Manatee Ave and 60th….karoake (even costume karaoke!), $1 Killian’s daily, live entertainment…pool, WII contest, Tina is my favorite bartender, Nick is cool too…

  17. Lisa Says:

Will’s Honky Tonk Tavern on Swift – it is THE shady place for sunny people!

  18. Marlene Randolph Says:

In mid-August, we will be opening a World of Beer Franchise in Sarasota right off 75 on Cooper Creek. The bar will consist of several hundred beers from around the world and is a franchise of the popular bar in Tampa. Come check it out when it opens!!

  19. JP Says:

    Marlene,

    CL has you covered!
