June 22nd, 2009 by Cooper Levey-Baker in NewsCEDAR’S BAR & GRILL
The Basics: 2385 12th St., Sarasota, 953-5531 [map it]
Signature drink(s): Miller Lite
Most friendliest bartender(s): Al (actually the owner, but hella nice)
Even though it’s just a hop, skip and a jump from Ed Smith Stadium, Cedar’s has never had to rely on spring training attendees to fill its dark environs. On the Tuesday night I visited, the crowd was mostly neighborhood folks, working-class patrons stopping by to catch up with friends and maybe watch the Red Sox-Marlins ball game on the tube. Cedar’s offers the typical bar attractions (Golden Tee, pool tables, CD jukebox), but most attractive is the affordable and delicious bar fare the kitchen puts out. Tuesday’s special, 35-cent wings, tasted spicy and crispy, perfect accompaniments to a Miller Lite draft served in a tall, frozen mug. Just after I sat down and asked about any nightly specials, a fellow customer sauntered by, informing the room, “Hey, there’s free beer… tomorrow.” If only that were true, random guy, if only that were true.
