2009 Drinking Guide: Peggy’s Corral

PEGGY’S CORRAL
The Basics: 4511 U.S. 41 N., Palmetto, 729-5442 or peggyscorral.net [map it]
Signature Drink(s): Renegade Bloody Mary
Most friendliest bartender(s): Tammy and Cindy (aka “Spider”)

It’s pretty easy to figure what Peggy’s Corral is all about: The north Manatee hangout has been voted “Best Biker Bar in Florida” by Born to Ride and Full Throttle magazines for the past three years. Every Sunday nearly 1,000 bikers descend upon this roadhouse for a weekly wet T-shirt contest, live music and some infamous $1.50 Bloody Marys. Owner Terry Toner (aka “Dad,” “Pop” or “Rip”) has improved the bar’s image since taking over 11 years ago from a woman named Margaret. (There’s never been a real Peggy.) Shit still gets crazy, though. Bras are stapled all over the ceiling among pictures of drunken debauchery. Toner’s wife Debbie (aka “Mom,” “Peggy” or “Tweety Bitch”) is known for her yellow bikes. Best day of the week? “Wet Twat Wednesday,” when dancers from the Cheetah come up to teach ladies how to work the pole. Every October, meanwhile, the West Coast Bike Rally, the biggest on the Gulf Coast and Toner’s creation, draws 30,000 bikes and always launches from Peggy’s. So yeah, people here like bikes.
