The Shamrock has undergone a major makeover since owner Derek Anderson took over two years ago. The Irish pub, which was once known for giving a free beer to people just released from the jail down the street, now has karaoke Saturday nights, occasional live music and a fun, young bar staff. Aside from all the Irish staples on tap, the cooler has a huge sampling of microbrews, which are rotated out as the cases empty. It’s not all new-fangled, though: The old phone booth and the flip-style jukebox keep the old-timey feel of the place intact. The bar top is covered with pennies and the beer menu can only be read properly when looking in the mirror behind the bar. Thursdays are flip night: Beat the bartender in a coin toss and get a half-price domestic draft.
