2009 Drinking Guide: Hide-A-Way Bar
July 1st, 2009 by Cooper Levey-Baker in NewsHIDE-A-WAY BAR
The basics: 5771 Beneva Road, Sarasota, 925-7383 [map it]
Signature drink(s): Bud Light
Most friendliest bartender(s): Karen, Missy Faye
The Hide-A-Way is the kind of place you could drive past 50 times and never think twice about, but in contrast to its modest exterior, the bar feels quite roomy inside, probably because of the long mirrors that line the walls, the rattan shades that block out the blinding sun and the mellowing Christmas lights that dangle above the bar. Pool and dart league competitors angle for victory in the rear of the bar, while working-class regulars plop down in the torn-leather seats and converse. Meanwhile, super bartender Karen keeps your mug nice and full. “People find us through people,” owner Patti says, saying the crowd is generated all by word of mouth. Come in, and you’re likely to leave having made a friend, which is exactly why the Hide-A-Way will be celebrating its 18th birthday all day this Sun., July 5.
