2009 Drinking Guide: Scalawags

SCALAWAGS
The basics: 1112 Whitfield Ave., Sarasota, 756-7397 [map it]
Signature drink(s): Icehouse on tap (you must visit icehouse.com, if only for the “Ladies of Icehouse”)
Most friendliest bartender(s): Michelle, Lisa

Tragic fact of life: The recession is even hitting dive bars. “Time’s are getting tougher,” Scalawags bartender Michelle admits. She says that as boat construction companies and other blue-collar businesses in the tavern’s Whitfield neighborhood go under, she’s seeing fewer and fewer regulars coming through the doors to lounge in Scalawags’ cavernous interior. The bar’s keepin’ on keepin’ on, though, with occasional live music, benefit events and Golden Tee tournaments. (Side note: After weeks of research for this issue, I have learned at least one thing — whoever invented Golden Tee must be a billionaire.) Despite Michelle’s laments, the place was lively on the Tuesday I visited: Dudes shot pool and Michelle pulled bottles from large metal ice tubes to keep them hydrated.
