— Sarasota Fourth of July revelers leave Siesta Key looking like a shithole. MC Coolidge has the photographic evidence.

— “A group calling itself Hometown Democracy won approval for a ballot measure in 2010 that would amend the constitution to prevent any changes to a county’s land use plan without a countywide vote.”

— The Sarasota County Property Appraiser releases its preliminary taxable values, and the numbers are down across the board: 10 percent on Longboat Key, 12 percent in Sarasota and 22 percent in North Port.

— Red County Editor Richard Swier issues a manifesto of sorts, delivered at the July 4 tea party held in Venice. Here’s how it starts: “I come before you today to confess my dependence. My dependence is greater than from any narcotic, prescription drug or alcoholic beverage. My dependence is deeper and more troubling because it has taken away our collective virtue, destroyed families, and encumbered everything our children will own.” A tad hyperbolic, perhaps? Does Swier really think his problem is “deeper” than that of a heroin addict going through withdrawal?
