R, 109 min
live action, color

Children of Men comes very, very close to being an absolute classic, but it’s just a touch too straightforward to provide a real hearty meal. What it is, however, is a brilliant example of a filmmaker using documentary- style filmmaking to create a believable fictional setting, and a unique use of extended takes to relentlessly pulse-pounding effect. Not to mention a variety of other inventive and brutally effective movie tricks.

I wish that it had won a (more substantial) Oscar or something so people would remember it, and that it had gained the attention it would have needed to help inspire filmmakers to start making more interesting science-fiction movies. Heavy themes and heavy action can exist side by side. 4 stars
