NEW WORLD BREWERY Don Chambers w/Urbane Cowboys/Roppongi’s Ace/Al Torchia Don Chambers sings in a raspy drawl, plays banjo with electric guitar aggression and writes Southern Gothic narratives about death, heartbreak and other grim topics set against slinky Southern-fried roots rock that crackles and burns with a fiery intensity. Last September, with his Athens, Ga.-based band GOAT, Chambers released his fourth album, Zebulon, which was co-produced by the Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood and featured on NPR’s Second Stage. Chambers has been likened to Tom Waits and Johnny Cash, and both are adequate, if not accurate, comparisons. (Chambers also performs at The Garage on Fri., July 10.) —Leilani Polk

CROWBAR Perpetual Groove I’ve seen this four-piece jamtronica ensemble play a dozen or so times and in a range of settings, from danky bars to a stage nestled in a lovely stretch of valley in the North Carolina mountains. No matter the backdrop, P-Groove delivers the dance-tastic goods, mixing electro with funk and country-rock tastiness, and throwing in synth-tastic covers of songs like the Butthole Surfers’ “Pepper,” “Naïve Melody” by the Talking Heads, and Peter Gabriel’s “Diggin’ in the Dirt.” —LP

FORD AMPHITHEATRE Aerosmith/ZZ Top As a child of the ’80s, my first intro to Aerosmith came via the singles off Permanent Vacation — “Dude Looks Like a Lady,” “Rag Doll,” “Angel.” Perhaps not the most appropriate MTV fare for an 8-year-old, but I didn’t really get the sexual (and humorous) overtones until I got older. This tour, the Steven Tyler-fronted rock band plays its most influential album, 1975’s Toys in the Attic, in its entirety, but scattered throughout a set of other hit singles. Bearded blues-rockers ZZ Top shares the bill with lots of riffage and ’80s numbers like “Cheap Sunglasses,” “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” and “Legs,” combined with ’70s classics like “La Grange” and “Tush.” —LP

NEW WORLD BREWERY YBOR CITY Sons of Hippies Album Release Party w/Geri X/GreyMarket/Villanova Junction “We’re hippies in essence and state of mind instead of being just poseurs,” singer/guitarist/key mistress Katherine Kelly told CL Saraosta in a recent interview about Sons of Hippies, her Sarasota-based duo with drummer/vocalist/synth master Jonas Canales. The music is driving, electro-psychedelic alt-rock, guitars warped or watery or run through multiple effects to create layered textures, and accompanied by the sweet but aggressive lead vocals of Kelly with harmonies by Canales. The band celebrates the self-release of its first album, Warriors of the Light, at this Tampa show with some pretty heavy-hitting local alt artists rounding out the bill. —LP

Headlining are alt-country purveyors Blue Mountain, a trio that hails from Oxford, Miss., and are fronted by formerly married duo Laurie Stirratt (bass and harmonies, twin sister of Wilco bass player John Stirratt) and Cary Hudson (guitar and vocals, recently named as one of the “Top 10 Alternative County Guitarists of All Time” by Gibson Magazine). A high-quality roster of area acts provide support. —LP

TROPICANA FIELD REH on the Road: Smash Mouth As the alt-rock movement of the early ’90s shook out, bands such as Smash Mouth cropped up, bands with very little in common with the likes of Nirvana. Smash Mouth scored two major hits — “Walking on the Sun” (1997) and “All Star” (’99) — in a kind of surf/hippie/pop realm. The group’s star has faded in the 2000s — their 2006 album Summer Girl failed to chart on the Billboard 200 — but the San Jose, Calif., group still has enough juice to entertain the crowd after a Rays game. The team has never lost one of these contests that are followed by a concert, and let’s hope that picking Smash Mouth to perform does not break the streak. —ES

COCK & BULL This Is an Adventure/Cyptorchid Chipmunk/Letters From Elvis/Mustache Rides Featuring Beardsley/Shiv The Blue Needle/Joey Potter Experience/Andy the Doorbum Another mixed bag of musical flavors will be spicing up the Cock & Bull Wednesday night. Emerging local electro-pop powerhouse This Is an Adventure is sure to draw their loyal and growing fan base as the show’s headliner. They will be joined by the always visually intriguing Letters From Elvis, technical prog-rock bass-and-drum duo Shiv the Blue Needle, North Carolina’s happy hardcore hero Andy the Doorbum, bizarre West Virgina-based ska/punk/WTF band Cryptorchid Chipmunk, and the entirely-too-normal-to-be-on-this-bill Joey Potter Experience. The flyer says “Mustache Rides Featuring Beardsley” (not sure if that’s a musical group or an activity). —Tim Sukits
