Walker is a historical biography about William Walker, the white, genocidal president of Nicaragua in the mid 1800s. The film is an intense and brutal portrait of a man driven to complete and utter madness by power and isolation. It’s also a zany slapstick comedy. This is black comedy with both the black and the comedy turned all the way up. If this sounds good to you, then seek this out immediately. If not, stay away.
This is what happens when a politically minded, rebellious and brilliant filmmaker (Alex Cox, director of Repo Man and Sid and Nancy) gets studio money and stars. The spectacle he crated with them is remarkable, and he never got them again. The film was barely released and unavailable for years, but recently released in a superb package by Criterion. 4.5 stars
