Movie review: Fly me to the Moon
July 31st, 2009 by Roslyn Scott in Arts, Film, NewsA sci-fi adventure with few special effects?
Moon, a UK entry in three film festivals, does not need an expensive Hollywood budget. Its dramatic strength lies in Duncan Jones’ skillful direction of the main character, Sam Bell, an astronaut/miner we bond with from the minute we watch the first frame of the film.
The ship he inhabits for his three year stint as a miner of Helium-3, a product we need to sustain us on Earth, is very homey and not like the sterile pods we are used to seeing astronauts in. Lunar Industries has placed him alone in space with only Gerty (the voice of Kevin Spacey), a robotic computer that acts as his lifeline. There is a mystery unfolding. Why does Sam Bell, played brilliantly by Sam Rockwell, think he sees other people onboard the vessel? Will Lunar Industries honor his contract and send him home in the two weeks he has left on the moon? All answers are revealed in the last minutes of the film. Be patient. The wait is worth it.
