“Doctor, doctor give me the news; I got a bad case of lovin’ you…” A little classic rock throw back for all the Kid Rock fans.
Anyway — if you’re a third- or fourth-year medical school student, Florida State has one of their regional campuses down on Cocoanut Avenue. Say you’re a far-sighted medical student looking to assist medically underserved populations, or perhaps you’re just sick to death of Tallahassee. FSU’s regional campuses — of which there are eight, including two rural centers — allow clerkship directors to coordinate students’ rotations locally.
Local rounds include: family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, obstetrics-gynecology, geriatrics, psychiatry and emergency medicine.
Rotations are run through seven affiliated institutions, including Sarasota Memorial, Venice Regional Medical Center and Doctors’ Hospital of Sarasota.
This is a small, close-knit student community and each doctor-to-be has his or her class photo online along with a brief biography about what drew each to medicine and Sarasota.
The school also attempts to embody some pretty cool concepts of learning, almost similar to New College — here, it’s the Student Learning Communities. Something that started as an informal gathering of very very bright people, curious about their chosen field and naturally congregating together in common “lounge” areas about the small campus, has become a more formalized unit. One that breaks down a lot of the competitive atmosphere that exists among medical students. It’s a common meeting ground physically and intellectually, where traing notes can be compared and examined.
Which, one can imagine creates better students — thus better doctors and better health care for all of us.
