BEST SARASOTA FILM FESTIVAL FILM
Tony Manero

When previewing the film Tony Manero, Sarasota Film Festival Programmer Holly Herrick felt obliged to add a disclaimer to her normal before-screening pep talk about the festival and its sponsors. She complimented the audience for having the daring to come see the film, and warned us that it was the darkest movie the festival had ever screened. Um, yikes. The film was indeed disturbing, and certainly not pleasurable to watch. But Pablo Larrain’s tale of a psychopathic Chilean nightclub dancer who is obsessed with emulating the main character in Saturday Night Fever is not easily forgotten, and maintains an aura in your brain long after the lights have gone up. Kudos to the Sarasota Film Festival for having the courage to offend us.
