Sarasota is blessed with a profusion of sushi joints that range from serviceable to excellent. None match the incredible fare produced by Masaki Matsunae at Vizen in Gulf Gate. The simplest sushi and maki are precise and elegant, but the real joy comes in ordering off of “Matsu’s” chalkboard, which list creations like lightly smoked scallops, lobster hand rolls, and the latest shipment of world-class fish. I’ve heard and read a lot about how great Vizen is and was greatly disappointed when my husband and I tried to go there last Friday night and it was closed — no sign, no note, no comment on their website. It makes me wonder if it’s in trouble, they don’t care or just decided to take a night off and not let anyone know. May be great sushi but it’s unlikely I’ll venture down in the near future to “see” if they’ve decided to open.

They were on vacation last week. There was a message on the restaurant’s voice mail.
Awesome spot, both the husband and wife work 6 days a week, and this is their first vacation in over 3 years. BTW I would make reservations if you are going on a Friday night.

really? not impressed at ALL. j-pan. only j-pan. bee ridge in the publix plaza. ONLY. friendly staff and the best in sushi. anywhere.
