NEW WORLD BREWERY David Dondero w/Christina Wagner San Francisco-based folk rocker David Dondero sings in a pained emo tone and writes like a poet, setting his lyricism against solid and simple roots music. He gets melancholy in songs like “Twenty Years,” about a man readjusting to life after prison, and nostalgic in “South By South,” with its stream-of-consciousness memories of Florida that nod to Tampa’s own commercialized historic district: “So I jumped my pogo stick, all the way to Ybor City / Where they burned up a couple blocks, and to me seemed like a pity / That was once a Cuban district and a center for the arts / Was now a mall-like atmosphere, homogonous and insincere / They burned its heart right out / Down south of the south.” —Leilani Polk

FORD AMPHITHEATRE REO Speedwagon/Styx/Night Ranger A night of B-grade ’70s rock by bands known for their epic power balladry. REO Speedwagon has purveyed such cheesified hits as “Take it on the Run,” “Keep on Loving You” and “Can’t Fight This Feeling.” Styx brings my personal fave, “Come Sail Away,” though I really only dig it when Cartman’s singing. And Night Ranger offers up the classic “Sister Christian” among other songs you probably don’t know. This is a pavilion-only show. —LP

SKIPPER’S SMOKEHOUSE Igor & Red Elvises/Midnight Bowlers League You’re asking yourself, “What the eff happened to the Red Elvises?” Well, my friends, this is the freshest lineup of the Russian-American rock band originally formed in 1995 by L.A.-by-way-of-Ukraine musicians Igor Yuzov (guitar, vocals) and Oleg Bernov (bass, vocals). The band now features Igor as the sole driving force behind the Red Elvises’ fusion of surf rock, rockabilly, reggae, roots, lounge and traditional Russian music. (Bernov left the band in 2009 to pursue a career as a clown in Slava’s Snow Show, a traveling Russian circus group. For real.) Among the new lineup of players are bassist Kfir Melamed and lady singer/guitarist Milka Ramos. Midnight Bowlers League opens for the energetic ensemble on Friday while The Vodkanauts provide support on Saturday. —LP

VAN WEZEL PERFORMING ARTS HALL Boyz II Men The Grammy-winning R&B group enjoyed their heyday in the early-to-mid-’90s as a quartet, topping the charts with such schmaltzy AC balladry as “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday,” “End of the Road” and “I’ll Make Love to You.” The current incarnation tours as a trio featuring Nathan Morris, Shawn Stockman and Wanya Morris. —LP

AMERICAN LEGION POST 312 The Ricky & Franky Rockin’ Oldies Show
THE STATE THEATRE Attack! Attack!/I Set My Friends on Fire/Miss May I/Our Last Night/The Color Morale Not sure if it works — vox box vocals intertwined with gut roars, fast and heavy rhythms with slow and heavy doom-filled breaks, the random techno rave beat that makes you scratch your head. Ohio metalcore group Attack! Attack! just parted ways with lead vocalist Nick Barham, but is soldiering on with keyboardist/growler Caleb Shomo picking up where Barham left off, with Caleb’s programming, keys and other variousness backtracked live with 808 samples and an iPod. Sounds very exciting. —LP
TUESDAY, Nov. 3
ACE’S Half Dub
CROWBAR Pretty Lights Derek Vincent Smith is the producer behind Pretty Lights, his song creations marked by high hip-hop drama, pumping beats, swells of electro sonics and layers of samples — fizzed-out basslines, laser beam shots, the occasional MCed hooks, like “Fuck ’em, I didn’t want to go to heaven anyway.” Drummer Cory Eberhard joins Smith for the live show and their performances are augmented by “cutting edge” lighting and LED effects. Download the latest Pretty Lights album, Passing By Behind Your Eyes, for free at prettylights.com. —LP

THE STATE THEATRE Tantric/Soul Stash/Atom Smash/Unspoken/Seven Years Past The post-grunge alt-rock fivesome (formed in 1999 by former members of Days of the New and throaty-voiced singer Hugo Ferreira) had some minor fame with their 2001 platinum-selling debut and its hit single, “Breakdown,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts. Currently, Ferreira helms Tantric without any of his original bandmates, and even released a new album, Mind Control, with a completely re-imagined lineup. —LP
