ORPHEUM Captured! By Robots A one-human experimental comedy rock act, JBOT (aka Jay Vance), is backed/enslaved by inhuman (robot, ape and ambiguous) players: DRMBOT 0110, a severed doll’s head on drums, assistant drummer AUTOMATOM, GTRBOT666 on bass and guitar, The Ape Which Hath No Name on tambourine halo, The Son of the Ape Which Hath No Name on monkey cymbals, and on horns, despite missing key air-conducting parts, the Headless Hornsmen. —Leilani Polk
PUSH ULTRA LOUNGE Pete Yorn I’m an admitted fan of Pete Yorn’s 2001 debut, Musicforthemorningafter. It’s full of alt-pop gems like “Life on a Chain,” “For Nancy (’Cos it Already Is),” and “Strange Condition,” the last featured on such romantic comedy soundtracks as Me, Myself & Irene, 40 Days and 40 Nights and The Sweetest Thing. The Jersey-based singer-songwriter has released four more albums since then, including his latest, Break Up, a collaborative concept album recorded with actress-singer Scarlett Johansson and inspired by Serge Gainsbourg’s duets with Brigitte Bardot. Yorn performs solo at his Bay area stop. —LP

THE STATE THEATRE Say Anything/Eisley/Moneen/Miniature Tigers “Hate Everyone,” the first single off Say Anything’s new self-titled LP, is an anthem against the world at large. From the beginning, lead singer-songwriter Max Bemis makes the snotty assertion, “Well, if you think I’m being harsh / Well, baby keep on counting stars / ’Cause I hate everyone / I hate everyone / I hate everyone / Upon this cursed earth,” then concludes with an ironic “I guess that everyone includes me … And that’s why I’m an humanist.” The L.A. six-piece’s pleasant fusion of emo-punk and alt-rock stands out from the rest and their fun and cheeky lyricism makes it all the better. —LP

THE STATE THEATRE The Get Up Kids w/Kevin Devine/Mansions Kansas City, Mo.’s Get Up Kids are credited with helping pioneer the second-wave emo movement in the mid-’90s, though their sound has a grittier alt-rock edge generally missing from the punk-pop that followed. The fivesome broke up in ’05, reunited for a surprise show in late ’08, and are now touring in honor of the 10th anniversary of the re-release of Something to Write Home About, their most successful studio album to date. New material is supposedly in the works. —LP

THE STATE THEATRE Tech N9ne w/Krizz Kaliko/Kutt Calhoun/Big Scoob/Slaughterhouse/Stevie Stone/Glasses Malone For nearly 25 years, Tech N9ne (real name Aaron Dontez Yates) has been working the underground hip-hop scene with his heavy-hitting brand of Midwestern rap, his rhyming style slow and measured, or fast-paced and calculated to deliver the maximum effect of his intelligent lyricism, all of it paid down against beat-dramatic production. Tech N9ne co-heads Strange Music, an indie hip hop record label, and the tour for his 10th and latest studio LP, K.O.D., features some of the hottest Strange artists. —LP

RUTH ECKERD HALL Steve Miller Band When I was 12, my family took a road trip to the North Carolina mountains and one of few albums we brought (and listened to on repeat) was Steve Miller Band’s Greatest Hits 1974-78. I must know every song on that album word-for-word, all its silly innuendo (“Really love your peaches / Wanna shake your tree”) and all its moments of heady psychedelia. The longtime rockers haven’t released any new material since 1993’s Wide River, but let’s face it — no one’s going to a SMB show to see new music; they’re hoping for “The Joker” and “Fly Like an Eagle,” and I expect they won’t be disappointed. —LP
