Drawing on the Left Side

Friday, March 5th, 2010

How’s Sunny Sarasota?!  Well, Palm Springs, Calif., is also warm. You can go into the sun and warm up but then go into the shade and cool off. I love it! It’s really funny to me because many people I have spoken to have said, “Why did you move from Florida into the desert?” They say that the temperature gets to 120 degrees in the summer. Yeah, I looked that up and it gets to 107 and only like five days out of the year.  Also have they been in weather that is 100 degrees and 100 percent humidity? Only you guys can relate!

Anyway! I am enjoying the mountains around the valley I am currently living in. I have been sketching… a lot. So here are some pieces. Enjoy!

Drawing on the Left Side (formerly Artist in Residence)

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

So,  I talked to a friend of a friend and now I will no longer use Craigslist. It’s really only good if you are buying something and going in person to pick it up/pay for it.

Yeah, I got an email back from the children’s book author. He pretty much was saying he was still looking around, blah, blah, blah, you are too expensive aka “I wanted to rip you off.”

So, no go with that guy!

I did work on some pieces of my friend Julie. We were hanging out before I left Sarasota and I had a blast drawing her while she was telling me about her drama-filled life. I ended up making all of these:

Artist in Residence

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

“Well we’re finally here.”

The journey was long and totally awesome. Hi, Adriana here. I left Sarasota! I just went cross-country and am settled in Palm Springs, Calif. Things are actually quite similar to Sarasota here. Only difference is the geography is opposite.  You know, mountains instead of the gulf and dry air instead of wet air.

Wow, what a trip and it’s not over yet. What is going on now? Well…

I have been keeping in touch with Tom P. about illustrating a children’s book. As you all know I just love looking for freelance projects.  No, seriously, it’s very amusing.

What’s the difference between fine arts and illustration, you ask? Well, an illustrator conveys a message through a picture. Fine arts, well I personally don’t really understand it and that is why I only do it occasionally. Fine arts-wise, I only paint landscapes. This is Venice Beach, baby:

Artist is Residence: Faces from Facebook

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

So, in my last post I said I was working of friends in Halloween costumes. After that everyone wanted to be an illustration, and I felt like it was a good homework assignment — even though I’m finished with school. It gives me dead lines and forces me to be creative since I’m drawing the same type of subject matter. Anyway… check them out and if you want one done look me up on Facebook!

Artist in Residence: Halloween Facebook

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

OK, so Halloween was what, about two and a half weeks ago? I am still enjoying it!

On Facebook, everyone I know (probably you, too) has had their costumes as their profile picture. I have been having so much fun with it. Halloween costumes are a costume plus people usually get into character when wearing one. Here are some illustrations I have made recently. Trust me, more are to come! Will you be my next character?

Artist in Residence: Birthday time!

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

This last month there have been many birthdays. I always make a postcard for the person I care about. Here are four I did most recently:

Adriana Raby is a local artist who recently graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design with a degree in illustration. She could have gone to New York City and tried to latch onto a corporate position. Instead, the 24-year-old chose to kick-start her career here in Sarasota.

Artist in Residence: A disappointing freelance T-shirt project

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

OK, so I was looking for more freelance jobs and I found one for T-shirt designing. The company is called Concentric Clothing Concepts. I met with the creator of the company and he wanted to see what I could come up with for Sacred Geometry. I don’t know too much about it and felt a little frazzled because he wanted me to draw sketches during the interview. No big deal but he kept repeating, “I want you to make a positive message through a positive design.” Truthfully, I didn’t know if I was doing what he wanted because he really didn’t give me feed back. He just kept saying that.

Follow the jump to see what I came up with:

Artist in Residence: Trying my hand at manga

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

I  was always send my portfolio to companies I think I can work for. After sending my work I send a thank you postcard. I illustrate the picture side and have contact info on the other side. I got this e-mail a year after sending out my résumé/portfolio:

How are you? I hope you are doing well. I have a question about your art style. Do you draw manga cartoon characters? I have a colleague looking for a manga character artist to re-touch his characters. If you don’t do manga, do you know anyone who does? If you do draw manga, do you have any current samples I could forward to my colleage, Clyde? Thanks a bunch. Talk with you soon.

So, I sent him these samples:

Artist in Residence: Images of Venice (Italy’s, not Florida’s)

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

OK, so right now I am working on a wedding painting for my cousin Lora. She has told me in the past how she loves this piece. I took this picture in Venice, Italy, drew the photo in pencil and then made a piece using Corel Painter. The digital image is the one she liked. Lora thought it was a painting. The images I have posted today are the process I went through to get to the finished oil painting. I don’t think it’s finished but I am going to put it out of eyesight so I can work out the flaws later on. Enjoy and I always except constructive criticism. Thanks!
