Skinny Puppy plays at State Theatre Sat., Nov. 18

Ed. note: This piece was compiled by Jennifer Almond.

THURSDAY, Nov. 26
CROWBAR Gil Mantera’s Party Dream The duo-turned-trio from Ohio produces synthtastic New Wave-flavored pop melodies with overaffected and vocoder robotic vocals trading off atop bleeptastic beats. This is the band’s second round in town since the release of their 2009 album, Dreamscape, and their live show is worth checking out for sure. Frontmen/maybe-brothers Ultimate Donny and Gil Mantera are ringmasters of absurdity in tacky spandex who bring a sort of gross animal magnetism to their chaotic, alcohol-fueled performances. If you missed ’em at Sarasota’s Cabana Inn on Tuesday, here’s your makeup date. —Leilani Polk

Movie review: Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox is a kids’ movie for adults

Kylie (Wally Wolodarsky) and Mr. Fox (George Clooney) plot a dangerous heist

[RECOMMENDED] Fantastic Mr. Fox
Directed by Wes Anderson. Featuring the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray. Rated PG.

Fantastic Mr. Fox certainly looks the part of a kids’ movie. It’s based on a children’s book (by the beloved Roald Dahl, no less), and tells a vivid and entertaining story about a cast of wild critters brought to life through a combination of stop-motion animation and computer wizardry. There’s no profanity or heavy on-screen violence, and the film is briskly paced (under 90 minutes long), very funny and sports a killer soundtrack. Still, no one will ever confuse Mr. Fox with a Disney production, and that’s because every frame of the film is dripping with the sensibility of its creator, writer/director Wes Anderson.

Linkage: News from around the Suncoast in five clicks or less

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

linkage16— Sarasota loses another connection to its circus past: “Arthur Grotefent, a former member of the famous family circus troupe, The Flying Wallendas, died Friday at age 95. ‘He was one hell of a wire walker,’ said Jackie LeClaire, 82, who performed with Grotefent in the 1940s. A Sarasota resident, Grotefent was one of the original members of the 7-People Pyramid in the Great Wallenda High-Wire Act. Seven people in the family troupe formed a pyramid and walked a tightrope.” RIP.

Atomic Holiday Bazaar interviews Sew It’s for You

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Julie Marriott of Sew It’s For You just had a baby boy (and he’s cute as hell!) and guess what folks?! She is working both Atomic shows on Saturday 12/12 and Sunday 12/13. I can barely scoop poop out of the litterbox (but I do because I am civilized) but I can’t imagine working a crazy craft show after having a young ‘un (just wanted to sound a bit countryfied this morning). So to all you mama’s and papa’s I salute you. Ok back to the crafty world. Julie is a delight and embroiders a sweet dish of amusing images. Check out her interview below:
Name of Business/Website Address? Sew It’s For You http://www.sewitsforyou.etsy.com/

What City/State do you reside in? Tarpon Springs, Florida

Is this your first time attending Atomic or have you done the show before? This is my 3rd time attending Atomic and the 2nd I have been in it.

What do make and plan on bringing to Atomic? I make all hand embroidered items. This year I am planning on bringing all sorts of cheeky items to appeal to a variety of folks. There will be some “adult” pieces and loads of great gifts for the holidays. I will also be filling custom orders.

Video game news: Game developers drive iPhone’s growth

Super Monkey Ball for iPhone

You only need $100 and a Mac to develop apps for the iPhone. If it’s Twitter, games, email, GPS navigation or Facebook, “there’s an app for that” on the iTunes App Store. The iPhone’s success is largely owed to the developers, ranging from big name studios to a few guys in a garage, ala Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, who have made the device the swiss army knife of phones.

Hanging at M Gallery: Oleg Radnov’s “Lady Plumber”

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Do you ever have those days where you feel perhaps you arrived in the wrong place, wearing the wrong clothes, thinking the wrong thoughts, having the wrong assumptions and it all turned out to be ridiculously right? Or at least perfect for the occasion? I have those days fairly often… It is as if the universe is telling me, as my children say, to “chillax.” When I look at Oleg Radnov’s “Lady Plumber” I am reminded of those times in my life — oh so wrong, yet oh so right. She is hanging at M Gallery of Fine Art (16 S. Palm Ave., Sarasota, 954-8774 or mgalleryoffineart.com) along with several other of his magnificent paintings…

Music feature: Eddie Sager may not have health insurance, but he has plenty of friends, and they’re helping him fight cancer with a charity concert this Sunday

“It could have been a really ugly situation, and it’s turned into a really beautiful situation.”

The Kidney Koncert: A Benefit for Eddie Sager
5-10 p.m. Sun., Nov. 29, The Children’s Garden, 1670 10th Way, Sarasota, 330-1711, $25

Six months ago Eddie Sager got home from his job taking care of plants at The Children’s Garden, then headed out to his night job as a bartender at Cork out on St. Armands. During the drive he started feeling a sharp pain in his right kidney. He tried to ignore it, and focused on setting up the bar for service, but the pain became so great he could no longer stand up.

A co-worker rushed him to the hospital, where he received a battery of tests. After a painful six-hour visit, the diagnoses came back: Sager had a hernia, kidney stones in his left kidney and a tumor in his right kidney.

And no health insurance.

jeffshaaraCliff Roles interviews Jeff Shaara

From our boy Cliff Roles:

Jeff Shaara, a descendant of Italian immigrants, was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey (”Shaara” was originally spelled “Sciarra”). He grew up in Tallahassee, Florida, and graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Criminology. From age 16, Jeff operated a rare coin business, first out of his home, then in a retail store. After moving to Tampa, Jeff became one of the most widely known coin and precious-metals dealers in Florida. In 1988, Jeff’s father, Michael Shaara, died, and Jeff made the decision to sell his business, and take over the management of his father’s estate.

In 1993, the film “Gettysburg” was released, which was based on his father’s classic novel, The Killer Angels. After the critical and commercial success of the film, Jeff was approached about the possibility of continuing the story, finding someone to write a prequel and sequel to The Killer Angels. After some considerable soul-searching, Jeff decided to try to tackle the project himself. The decision was difficult in many ways, but most challenging because Jeff had no previous experience as a writer.

In February, 2003, the major motion picture “GODS AND GENERALS”, based on Jeff’s first book, was released by Warner Brothers.
