NEW WORLD BREWERY Matt Butcher/Rebekah Pulley/Red Shepherd Americana musician Matt Butcher has only been living in Florida since 1999, but within those 11 years he’s had some success as part of The Heathens — an Orlando-based band that made waves in 2006 when the music video for their song “Stickin’ Around” was featured at the Los Angeles Film Festival — and earned a two-night solo gig opening for The Avett Brothers in Tennessee. His 2008 album, Me and My Friends, received stellar reviews and is available on Butcher’s website for a “pay what you can” price. Butcher is joined multi-Best of the Bay award-winning songstress Rebekah Pulley, and sunny folk-pop quartet Red Shepherd. —Matthew Spencer

The Scenestress at Super Bowl XLIV: part three

Monday, February 8th, 2010

siloWith two nights of celebrity parties under my belt it’s a bit tough to rally for more on Saturday, but I somehow manage to get dressed and get my ass to Mansion for the CBS party where LL Cool J is performing for an intimate crowd. Let me just say one thing: white people can’t dance. And these middle-aged CBS execs are so very white! LL takes it in stride though, putting on a great show with hits from “Going back to Cali,” to the ever popular “Doin’ it” and newer joints like “Headsprung.” I also find myself wondering if he’s been put up to saying the phrase “CBS” a certain number of times but hey, the network just gave him his own show, so I think he’s cool.

I can’t wait to get back over to the Bud Light Hotel, though, where Usher and Jamie Foxx are scheduled to take the stage. All over the party people are shakin’ it — surely a by-product of Usher’s performance (which I missed while I was watching LL). Mr. Foxx soon emerges from the crowd with a microphone and acts as MC, knocking back Bud Light Limes and informing the crowd that he is going to take a lady home with him tonight. I imagine he’ll have no trouble finding one as a very leggy girl and a bootylicious babe jostle to get closer to the star. When the DJ puts on “Blame It,” we all go crazy and Foxx and his boys do a little synchronized two-step (as opposed to any actual singing). Photos after the jump! (more…)

Music Review: Dan Rixon’s In My Head

Dan Rixon – “In My Head”

Dan Rixon – In My Head

Sarasota float-around guitarist Dan Rixon unleashed a solo project in December with help from a number of other local hired guns. The album, fittingly called In My Head, is heavily Pink Floyd-inspired, especially Wall-ish, with random infant squeals, droning machines and thunderstorms filling the breaks between songs to add some natural rhythms to the tight instrumentation. Rixon admits that Floyd’s sound has always had an effect on him: “They’ve been my biggest influence since I discovered them in high school,” he says. (more…)

T-Bone talks noise on WSLR with County Commissioner Nora Patterson, Paul Caragiulo and CL’s own Tim Sukits

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Terry “T-Bone” Rhodes invited a group of distinguished guests to his Music Scene and Be Seen radio show on Saturday afternoon to talk about Sarasota’s city and county noise ordinances, the county’s entertainment ordinance, and the new Noise Ordinance CD compilation being released at the Cock & Bull at an all-day, all-local original music blowout on February 20. The first half of the episode, aired live on WSLR 96.5 LPFM, features Claire Franklin and Ed Midler, creators of the Noise Ordinance CD, along with Susan Rouwhorst from Scone Train and Bryan Beardsley, who treated the group to a live blues tune called “Fuzz Bunnies.” (49:45) T-Bone played a few yet-to-be-heard tracks off the soon-to-be-released album, including a selection from yours truly (27:20), who you’ll find listed as Tim Salem in the album’s line-up. The featured tracks from Scone Train (33:15) and Franklin’s band, Elysian Sex Drive (39:57), also got spins between some discussion (starts at 10:35) about how the CD came together and how awesome the SRQ music scene has become. Hear it after the break: (more…)

The-Ettes

The Ettes bring their punk rock to this year’s Tropical Heatwave

As the cold fronts taper off and temperatures rise to a pleasant degree, Floridian music lovers and those out-of-towners looking for a reason to escape from their less temperate locales begin gearing up for another season of outdoor music festivals. The following is a breakdown of Florida’s worthiest. Mark your calendars.

17th Annual Bob Marley Movement Caribbean Festival
When: February 27
Where: Bayfront Park, downtown Miami
Artists of note: Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Stephen “Ragga” Marley, Julian “Royal” Marley, Shaggy, Tarrus Riley, Capleton and Spragga Benz
Tickets: $50 general, $155 VIP
Details: Three of Bob Marley’s five music-making sons join several other well-regarded reggae artists for the 17th edition of an event that’s one part music festival, one part food drive where attendees are encouraged to donate nonperishable foodstuffs. So far, the fest has collected more than one million canned goods to benefit hunger and malnutrition organizations in Florida. The 2010 recipient is Curley’s House, which provides bulk food to individuals and families in need. bobmarleymovement.com/festival.html.
