Atomic Holiday Bazaar interviews Everything But the Girl

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Laura Gale of Everything But the Girl is Atomic alumni… She is a FOUR TIMER, folks! Laura produced the fashion shows for AHB II & III with Monica Eshkoli (of Freaky Tiki) and EBTG will be at both Atomic shows this year, Saturday Night, 12/12/09 and Sunday, 12/13/09.

I remember the first Atomic show in 2006, Laura made a point of stopping me a little before the doors were getting ready to open and she told me to stop and take it all in. What can I say? It was a moment, a very, very good moment! Everything But the Girl is kind of like Atomic Holiday Bazaar year round, we are very lucky to have such a fun and colorful place to shop in Sarasota! It wouldn’t be Atomic without Laura. Ms. Gale’s interview can be read below!

Atomic Holiday Bazaar interviews Cemetery Prints

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

I was introduced to photographer Sid Graves of Cemetery Prints by two people who are helping me and appearing at Atomic this year (Brian Blur and Doll Face, Inc.). Sid and his strikingly moody Cemetery Prints are appearing at AHB’s Saturday night and Sunday day shows.

As far back as I can remember I have been obsessed with cemeteries.

Carey Borden of C.A.B. Fayre is making a splash in the local DIY scene, I ran into her at the Stitch show in Delray Beach last weekend and it was a pleasure finally getting to meet her. Carey has a great eye for color, her clothing is fresh and sexy and her jewelry dangles in all the right places. In other words, this gal knows how to put shit together! C.A.B. Atomic Holiday Bazaar interviews Alison Ware

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Alison Ware has shown her pieces at Atomic before. The first time I saw her paintings they grabbed me. Not only because they were painted on cardboard, which for me causes my body and mind to react in a sort of bittersweet way. Cardboard makes me think of skid row in Los Angeles, moving and packing a billion times, being poor, but I digress.

Digression will occur a lot with these posts… and may I add, my digressions and thoughts may not relate to the artist I am writing about. Their points of view compared to mine may and probably are coming from another planet.

Now let’s move on from my fixation on Alison’s use of cardboard to the content of what she paints. Again, these images strike a chord in me, reminding me of feelings of being in high school (a place I hated) and feeling like if she had sat next to me in art class I would have passed her a note with a heart in it and maybe a joint.

Interview with Alison can be read right here, right now:

Name of Business/Website Address? Alison Ware / amoebamine.blogspot.com/

What City/State do you reside in? At the moment, Sarasota, Fla., but I’ll be moving to Washington, D.C., in early 2010.

Is this your first time attending Atomic or have you done the show before? I have attended once before, the second AHB in December 2007. I had a blast then, and am planning on a repeat of the fun this year!

Linkage: News From Around the Suncoast in Five Clicks Or Les

Friday, December 12th, 2008

— The lede in this morning’s Bradenton Herald: “If you’re expecting a Christmas gift from a college student this year, that gift may be as simple as an e-card, a hug and a smile, or, perhaps, nothing at all.” Why did they even add “this year”? Don’t college students normally stiff their family and friends? Maybe that’s just what I did in college.

— Joe Hendricks covers last week’s Rosemary Rising and, oh yeah, pops by the CL office for a look-see.

— Hannah Wallace is missing Atomic Holiday Bazaar again this year, and she ain’t happy about it. Me? I’d pretty much cancel anything to attend.

— Sarasota gets its very own YouTube O’Reilly Factor. Gulp. (By the way, for a conservative talk show, quite an, er, interesting choice of theme music.)

Blowin’ Up: Atomic Holiday Bazaar Returns, Bigger and Badder Than Ever

Monday, December 8th, 2008

In 2006, Atomic Holiday Bazaar was a success story, a hip showcase for items crafted by independent artisans that found a Suncoast audience few knew even existed. By the time Atomic 2.0 rolled around last December, you could feel momentum building. Vendors jockeyed for months to book tables at the event; retailers snatched up locally made pieces to carry in their shops; the crowds grew bigger.

This year, the buzz around Atomic is deafening. Make no mistake. Atomic III, which goes down this weekend, is nothing short of a genuine Event.

“People are waiting for Atomic,” says Laura Daniel Gale, owner of the Rosemary District boutique everything but the girl. Her shop is one of a growing number of Sarasota retailers that carry merchandise by Atomic artisans. “Like, they’re not going to buy anything until they can get to Atomic,” Gale says. “They’re going to fill their list with stuff they get there, and then go out and maybe land here after that, ’cause they, really, they know what to expect now, so they want to wait and get it all there.”

Atomic: Da’ Bomb

Monday, December 10th, 2007

Creative Loafing mentions Atomic Holiday Bazaar at every available opportunity, and today — the day after version 2.0 hit the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium — is no different. I just got word from Cemantha Crain, one of the event organizers, that her official count of patrons is 1,150. That number may only represent a small jump from last year’s attendence, but that’s nothing to frown about.

Crain writes in an email:

Everywhere I’ve been today (alright, I’ve only been to work and News and Books, but those count) everyone I’ve seen who went (prolly 10 people so far) all commented how many young people we had.  My favorite New College barista said it was the most young people she’s ever seen in one place in Sarasota. That’s rewarding, considering our primary objective was to create a young-person’s event.

I was most delighted to see old friends who I’d thought had moved away.  I didn’t even think to invite them because I’d thought they had abandoned Sarasota long ago.  But they were back, and truly brought a tear to my eye that they’d found out about Atomic on their own and showed up without realizing Adrien and I were behind it.  That, and, I saw a few sets of punk rock teenagers skulking around sans adults.  They actually chose to attend of their own volition.  Very cool, indeed.
