Local author and radio host Cooper Lawrence discusses her latest book
February 8th, 2008 by Maria Fisichello in NewsAs a radio host, author, relationship and psychology expert, Cooper Lawrence is always on the go. She is a regular guest and expert on CNN Headline News’s Showbiz Tonight
and has been on The Today Show, The O’Reilly Factor, The Early Show and The Tyra Banks Show, among many others.
Lawrence says the inspiration for her new book, Cult of Perfection: Making Peace With Your Inner Overachiever, was a combination of her Ph.D studies on developmental psychology and her female listeners. “The idea grew from my radio show which led to my research,†Lawrence explains. “My listeners don’t realize how unique they are. They think they are just doing what must be done in everyday life; they don’t realize how extraordinary they are to be mothers and career women and good role models.â€
Lawrence says that she wanted to look at current constructs. “I wanted to look at perfectionism and overachievers in comparison to the ’70s,†she says. “I found things now are very different. This generation of women grew up feeling like they can do anything and be the best at it; they grew up as overachievers. Women are at a very different place now compared to the past. Being an overachiever has become much more natural to them. I think the economy has required women to adapt and step up.†Lawrence says these female overachievers are driven not by survival, but by the desire to be good role models, especially for their children.
Lawrence is the host of a syndicated talk show appropriately titled The Cooper Lawrence Show, which airs on 107.9 The Link, weekdays from 7-10 p.m. She has been in radio for 15 years and is passionate and personal about her listeners. “I am very close with my listeners; they really inspire me,†she says. “We are very open; it’s really nice to have real conversations with real people. We laugh and have fun together — they are the true inspiration behind my writing.â€
Cooper Lawrence will be at Joseph-Beth Booksellers tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. for her book signing and Q & A lecture on her latest book, Cult of Perfection: Making Peace with your Inner Overachiever.
