Live Review: Avenue Q

July 23rd, 2008 by Anita Overcash in Arts

The Deal: Avenue Q, the Broadway musical that features puppets and humans, opened in Charlotte at Belk Theater last night.

The Good: It’s full of adult content, from puppet nudity to foul language. If you no longer watch Sesame Street (because you’re too old), but you still like puppets, then Avenue Q is a quick solution for entertainment. The cast tackled dating/relationships/sex, coming out of the closet, unemployment and finding a purpose in life with a batch of catchy and humorous songs. Highlights included a song about the internet/porn, a song about love/killing and puppets having sex. It’s definitely not a show for the kids.

The Bad: For most of the show, the topics took different routes to the same theme, but I felt a little lost as to why they even tried to tackle the subject of racism. The song declared ,“Everyone’s a little bit racist sometimes,” and despite bringing a little bit of humor to a heavy issue, it didn’t seem to fit with the show.

The Verdict: Don’t miss it. It’s a hilarious show that dishes out some good advice on how to live. Whether you are looking for your life’s purpose or you think you’ve already found it; Avenue Q will give you more than you bargained for.

Check it out: July 23, 24, 25, 8 p.m.; July 26, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; July 27, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Belk Theater, 130 N. Tryon St. 704-372-1000. www.blumenthalcenter.org.

WTF?! “Listings editor” is qualification to review a theater production? This is as ridiculous as Cheris Hodges’ movie review the other day. Anybody else out there miss the old days when CL was great?

  2. CBanks Says:

Did you see film critic Matt Brunson’s review of Batman? Or all of theater critic Perry Tannenbaum’s theater reviews that run every damn week? CL ain’t changed. Get a grip.

  3. Cheris Hodges Says:

Creative Loafing offers a chance for all of its writers to voice an opinion, Maggi Lent. Every week the experts publish their opinions in the paper and on the blog. Keep reading!
