More push to end outlaw gas chambers for stray animals
August 11th, 2008 by Karen Shugart in NewsAnimal welfare advocates are citing last month’s explosion at an Iredell County animal shelter as one more reason why gas shouldn’t be used to euthanize animals. The small explosion happened in the gas chamber at the end of a euthanasia cycle. Ten animals were inside.
Animal lovers have lobbied extensively for the state to ban gas in favor of lethal injection, the method favored by the American Veterinary Medical Association and other veterinary groups. Though state officials have tightened rules, they’ve been reluctant to ban the gas method outright. Union County officials are currently fighting a lawsuit from animal advocates who contend its gas chamber is cruel and violates state law.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control, a place where I’ve adopted several cats and volunteer on occasion, does not use gas. They have many wonderful pets available for adoption.
