Double standard
November 17th, 2008 by Nsenga Burton in The N WordLast week a school collapsed in Petionville, Haiti. Ninety people were killed and more than 150 were injured. The story was all over the place. Another school in Port-au-Prince, Haiti collapsed. Nine people were injured. There was no coverage. Why? Classism. Petionville houses the country’s wealthiest residents while Port-au-Prince houses its poorest. The media doles out coverage just like the government doles out aid — according to caste systems. I guess our concern for Haitians reflects that system since little to nothing has been said about the incident in Port-au-Prince.
