Filing electronically will speed up the rate of return by two-thirds, though. Those who file electronically can expect their N.C. income tax refund within two to four weeks. Filed via snail mail? You might have to wait three months.

“We’re backed up on that about four weeks,” Ken Lay, the state revenue secretary, said in an interview Thursday.

Lay said he had heard from numerous taxpayers expressing concern about their refunds, including people who are in dire financial straits because they have lost their jobs.
