DVD pick: The Hidden Fortress

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

By Adam Frazier

Akira Kurosawa’s 1958 film The Hidden Fortress has just about everything a cinephile could ask for. The characters are compelling, the story is simple yet elegantly told, and the visuals are impeccably composed within the frame. (more…)

North Korea’s Lil’ Kim

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Will someone please have a conversation with Kim Jong-Il before he blows himself up and then us. He’s clearly crazy or is he? If we can meet with our former “enemies,” Cuba and Venezuela, then we can chat with Lil’ Kim, who desperately wants some attention. If not a meeting, a conversation might work. Ignoring him is not working and he may just have to be dealt with, sooner rather than later.

Ernie Barnes dies

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

One of the most prolific and pioneering artists of the 20th century has died. Ernie Barnes was truly a renaissance man, having played professional football and becoming a world-renowned artist post-retirement. Most people remember him for his iconic painting that was part of the television series Good Times’ closing credits. “Sugar Shack” is one of his most famous paintings, making the cover of Marvin Gaye’s classic album I Want You (1976).  Barnes’ elongated figures and distinctive style will be missed.

CPCC is greening academia

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Face it: Green looks good in a corporate suit.

The Sustainability Technologies curriculum trains students for employment within a range of industries including environmental, construction, alternative energy and manufacturing. The program has a focus on energy production and waste reduction. The degree has four tracks: alternative energy, environmental engineering technology, sustainable manufacturing and green construction.

Graduates of the program can look to jobs in a burgeoning “green” economy, such as green-building supervisors, manufacturing technicians or sustainability consultants.

CPCC’s Center of Sustainability Program Coordinator Ernie McLaney says the degree also has a wider application that’s increasingly in demand by a variety of companies.

“Corporations want to be able to say they have an environmental policy person on their payroll,” McLaney says.

Florida plates show Jesus with blonde mullet

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

And you thought North Carolina’s proposal to produce “Choose Life” license plates, or South Carolina’s “In God We Trust” plates were a little odd. Now, Florida is getting ready to introduce two in-your-face, Christian-themed license plates. One of them sports a cross in front a stained-glass window, and the other one, which is drawing many negative reactions, is an image of Jesus on the cross. Or at least it’s supposed to be Jesus; what they’ve produced is a license plate with an image of someone with Aryan features, a blond beard, and an equally blond mullet haircut. I say if you’re gonna flaunt your religious beliefs publicly (didn’t JC address that in the parable of the Pharisee who prayed for showing-off purposes?), at least make it as accurate as possible; in this case, shouldn’t the image look like a Middle Eastern Jew? If citizens want to have their religious beliefs portrayed on their license plates (which I still think is an incredibly weird idea when you think about it), then, hopefully, Florida will soon introduce plates featuring Buddha, Krishna, the Star of David, the Moon & Crescent, a pentagram, and the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
