Wanda Sykes slays a drugged dragon

May 11th, 2009 by John Grooms in Boomer with an Attitude

It’s the Monday after Saturday’s White House Correspondents Dinner, and the media, particularly the Conservative World part of it, is going ballistic. It’s great. The right’s wingnut pundits are vying for the title of Most Likely To Have a Stroke Today, all because of comedian Wanda Sykes’ jokes about Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh. If you haven’t seen Sykes’ performance, we won’t ruin it by telling you the Limbaugh jokes, but we will tell you that she chided Palin, who was supposed to attend the dinner but backed out, by noting that the Alaska governor had “pulled out at the last minute,” adding that, “Somebody should tell her that’s not really how you practice abstinence.” Afterward, Sykes compared Limbaugh’s hatred of Obama to Osama bin Laden’s hatred of America, and, er, commented on it. Imagine the audacity of comedian Wanda Sykes being hired to tell jokes at the dinner and coming onstage and telling actual jokes! Now those jokes are an issue — which is odd, considering that the event was hosted by the Washington press, which laughed heartily at the jokes when Sykes  told them. Yep, it was vindictive humor, and yes, it was funny as hell, and yes, Limbaugh and his supporters deserve every joke, jibe, figurative slap and even possibly waterboarding the world can hand them, considering the mess they made of things during the last eight years, a period during which they somehow considered themselves the cocky, natural born rulers of the world. Now they can’t even take a joke. Like I said, it’s great. Here’s Syke’s performance.

Funny how those hypocritical Republicans saw nothing wrong when Limbaugh made those comments about Ted Kennedy dying. They even got plenty of comedy material out of it.

Further, to quote from a great post:

“I have to admit, I never really understood the right-wing sense of humor.

Like when Ronald Reagan joked in 1964 about the 17 million people who then went to bed hungry every night in America, saying that “they were all on a diet.”

Or when Rush Limbaugh called 13-year-old Chelsea Clinton a “dog.”

Or when George W. Bush yucked it up over the issue of the non-existent WMDs in Iraq during a “comedy” skit in the Oval Office.”

Read the full article about GOP humor at http://www.beggarscanbechoosers.com/2008/05/ted-kennedys-hospitalization-prompts.html, and then tell me that the right-wing morons really have a case here.

Here we go again with Grooms leaving out the information central to the situation because it makes them look bad. Sykes ended her skit by saying she hopes Rush’s kidneys fail. I would say that most of the people in the audience were not laughing at that point. Sykes even acknowledges that many were not laughing by say you must be laughing inside I know. Remember the Vice presidents daughter was just caught doing coke but I do not see republicans making jokes about that. The president has done drugs like pot and coke but jokes are not being done about that either.

The main problem is not the jokes. The problem is yet another Obama promise being broken. Obama said he would leave the mean spirited politics behind and bring everyone together. By allowing these jokes and laughing at them in public shows that he has broke this pledge yet again.

Humor is fine but mean spirited humor is not so fine. Also two wrongs do not make a right. I see that Grooms falls into the more wrongs the merrier crowd.

Fred any case the democrats have of past jokes by republicans is dwarfed by jokes and bad behavior perpetrated by the left. It would be neat to show the number of mean spirited democrat clips pile up beyond count.

  3. Lyn Says:

Who is Wanda Sykes? Is this a celebrity? In the United States?

This press conference thing was the first I’d heard of her. She appears to be just another hoodrat associate of those hoodrat Obamas. But reading other blogs today I’ve learned she is considered a comedian and has been on late-night TV. And she is apparently a homosexual.

All this together worries me a little. I know Supreme Court justice Souter is retiring this fall. Let’s hope Obama does not choose Sykes to replace him. As a gay minority female she is the poster-ho of political correctness.

  4. Frank, pay attention Says:

There you go, spreading false information again.

Grooms ended his post with a link to the entire skit. And, the skit was ended with a quote about the Obama’s dog.

Sykes did say she wishes Rush’s kidneys would fail, only after reminding the audience that he hoped Obama would fail and about his drug addiction.

What’s worse? One bloated jack ass, or our country?

I think: You’re insane. You post vitriolic bull shit on this site every week day, spreading hate-filled propaganda from the unRIGHTeous.

  5. UpNorthOutWest Says:

Ah, you lefties. Winning the battle of ideas. Rush Limbaugh! He was addicted to drugs!! That’s what you’ve got? Heck, even Obama’s media wing joins in the fray. Dick Cheney goes on “Face the Nation” and says Obama’s policies are making the country less safe. Unlike the lib Internet chattering class, Cheney would know. So what does Schieffer turn it into? “You side with Rush Limbaugh, not Colin Powell!” We know that’s how you all view the world, that anybody who disagrees with you as an evil villain.

But do you really think those of us paying attention can’t see through these tired, ridiculous games? That the Rush Limbaugh as boogeyman act isn’t perpetuated due to some polling results found by Rahm Emmanuel and his buddies Carville, Begala and Stephanopoulis?

But hey, at least you’ve got the utterly corrupted, utterly in the bag for Obama press continuing to carry your water.

You guys are so full of Right-Wing talking points I bet your vision is blurry.

For some real fun, watch Steven Colbert (another one of your heroes) roast President Bush at a past WH correspondent’s dinner:

  7. BILLY JOE BOB Says:

WHAT KIND OF HUMOR WOULD YOU EXPECT FROM A HOMOSEXUAL NEGRO. HER MOUTH IS FULL OF IT SO SOME OF IT MUST SPEW OUT.

  8. Luke Fisher Says:

Am I the only one who things Wanda Sykes is not that funny?

  9. Frank Says:

Grooms did put that link at the end of the article but he did not discuss the comment about wishing for Rush’s kidneys to fail. Grooms purposefully dodged the most incriminating line because it did not help his case. Why even write an article about this if you are going to skip the most important part. I watched CNN last night and King left the same part out. This is called error by omission.

“I think: You’re insane. You post vitriolic bull shit on this site every week day, spreading hate-filled propaganda from the unRIGHTeous.”

The quote you show has me saying that there are more negative and hateful comments on the left than the right. This is not insane or mean spirited. So tell me where I have misled people and tell me what propaganda I have spread. I spread the truth but the truth does not line up with the bleeding hearts of liberals. Also point to an instance where I have been insane or vitriolic. Your comments appear to be driving this point home for me.

  10. Frank Says:

Steven Colbert makes fun of everyone so whats your point? Do I need to grab a clip of him making fun of a liberal? Geez

  11. That's right, Frank Says:

    Comedians make fun of people.

Steven Colbert is a comedian, Wanda Sykes is a comedian.

She made fun of your backwards demigod. Deal with it. Limbaugh, also an entertainer, makes fun of the collective intelligence of the United States daily, and for that he’s rewarded with his much bragged about salary.

I’m pretty sure they can all handle themselves and don’t need your excessive commentary.

  12. Frank Says:

You are the one who is backwards my friend. Liberal is has been tried and failed, so trying to move along a liberal direction is backwards.

She is a comedian and she made a very poor joke. I never said she didnt have the right to make a flop of a joke about Rush. If only the joke had been funny atleast. The joke seemed less like a joke and more like a senseless attack on someone with different views.

This section is for commentary. Where do you think you are girl. Anyways they are not here to defend themselves so I decided to fill in the holes Grooms left out. If Grooms would report the whole truth I would not need to correct him all the time.

  13. erin Says:

I’m embarresed to be a democrat now and days. Obama with his corrupt relations, acorn being investigated for voters fraud, obama closing down gitmo when thousands of our citizens died by their hands, apologizing to our enemies for us having pride in our country, going to a church that damns whites and america! And these liberals just LOVE him to death. Theyre brainwashed by this idiot. He is putting our country in debt. I’m switching to republican party. VOTE REPUBLICAN BECAUSE NOT EVERYONE CAN BE ON WELFARE!

  14. Frank Says:

    Great points Erin.

I would like to add this however. The republicans are the better of two evils. Even the republicans have made mistakes that go against the constitution lately. If you know nothing of the candidates vote republican but sometimes the democrat is the better guy but this is a rare situation.

Ron Paul had some radical ideas so I stayed away from him. He was actually sticking to the constitution. Sticking to the constitution seems radical even to me so this shows how far we have wandered off from the original intent of that document. After seeing Obama in action I would take Ron Paul as Prez in a heart beat. The biggest thing about Ron I didnt like was his blame America crap that Obama agrees with.

  15. Edward H. Says:

“She made fun of your backwards demigod. Deal with it. Limbaugh, also an entertainer, makes fun of the collective intelligence of the United States daily, and for that he’s rewarded with his much bragged about salary.”

Exactly. The Right’s embracing of Rush while condemning Sykes is the ultimate in hypocrisy. Sykes’ comments pale in comparison to the utterly reprehensible quips Rush has made time and again over the years. At least Sykes attacked another adult; as someone else mentioned above, Rush attacked Chelsea Clinton, A CHILD. If any of you right-wing posters on here support that, then you’re as big a moron (and as hideous a person) as Rush.

  16. Frank Says:

I did not hear the exact comment about Chelsea Clinton but it had something to do with her being ugly.

Did Rush say he was sorry for his comment?

Was the statement true? I have heard that she is not very pretty but the children should be left out of the line of fire. I guess this does not work for Palins kids either.

Many of Rush’s quips were taken from what Democrats have said themselves. Barack the magic negro is one example of this. So was Chelsea such a case?

So do I support the Chelsea attack? Not enough information to know. Without additional information I would say I dont support the statement but knowning Rush, one of the things I mentioned above probably occured.

Anyways Edward you are still missing the earlier points. Obama said he would be above this type of politics. You are also implying two wrongs make a right which is rather weak.

  17. Edward H. Says:

I see. So Rush’s mean comment about Chelsea was, like everything else in the country, the Democrats’ fault. Funny how it always works out that way in the minds of Republicans.

You can verify the following on various sites: “On November 6, 1992, three days after her father won the elections, when Chelsea was still in braces, Rush Limbaugh said the following on his television show: ‘Everyone knows the Clintons have a cat; Socks is the White House cat. But did you know there is also a White House dog?’ He then pointed to a video monitor, which switched to a picture of Chelsea. Limbaugh has claimed that it was a technical error, despite the fact that the show was taped in advance of its broadcast, giving Limbaugh ample time to fix the ‘error.’”

And it’s not like Sykes fired the first shot. Anybody remember when Rush joked about the way to cut down on crime was to put a basketball in each black person’s hands? The Right has been laughing at him for years now for making jokes like this, yet Sykes makes one crack, and they’re all like, “Aw, poor, poor Rush.” Give me a break!

  18. Frank Says:

    Did you miss the following?

I said without additional information I would not support the statement.

You have now supplied additional information and If what you say is true in your second paragragh is sounds like Rush was guilty and his excuse seems kind lame.

Now as for a generic black joke as proof Rush started this, now that is poor logic. I bet Sykes has made plenty of generic white jokes in her comedy routine.

This still falls into the two wrongs does not make it right but I will concede that Rush was in the wrong about Chelsea. Anyways great digging on your part Edward to support your point. You are ahead of 95% of the posters here by actually supporting your statement when challenged.

Now can you mitigate Obama’s pledge to be above all of the partisan BS while enjoying hateful jokes.
