Day of the Dead celebrated

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) festival went down at Levine Museum of the New South on Sun., Nov. 2. The event is a Mexican tradition where the living remember deceased friends and family members (with altars, etc.). The festivities at the museum included dance performances, authentic costumes, activities for children and adults (which included decorating skulls made of sugar with icing), food and more. See pictures below.

Tenacious D, Beastie Boys to visit CPCC?

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Rumor has it that today from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Central Piedmont Community College (specifically on the Central campus between the Kratt and Giles buildings) some celebrity musicians might make a special appearance. These include the mock-rock duo Tenacious D, hip-hoppers the Beastie Boys and maybe even rocker gal Sheryl Crow. Again, it’s all unconfirmed, but it might be worth checking out.

An end in sight for Purgatory

Friday, October 10th, 2008

On Oct. 1, the following message was posted on Single Cell Productions’ (Think: Purgatory) MySpace page:

“The Following is a Message Directly from Torch Himself:
Purgatory - noun. the limbo you are trapped in until you evolve.
Ragnarok-noun. literally “the Twilight of the Gods” - the time when old gods die.
Starting today, the count down to the end of all that is has officially begun.
The last Purgatory event? will be the 7 year anniversary in April of 2009:
Purgatory 43- Ragnarok.
If you’ve ever wanted to go to Purgatory or have been wanting to go again, your time is limited. There are only 4 left including the anniversary show. I’ve decided to give everyone advance warning so that anyone wanting to make plans to attend the last run can do so.
My reasons are private. I would like to thank everyone that has contributed over the course of our 7 year run and the fans who made it all possible. No tears, please. I would like the last 6 months to be a celebration of what we’ve done , not a funeral.
We will dance together one last time, you and I in the flames of destruction?
Purgatory 43 - Ragnarok is the end of all that is.”

With all that out in the open - Purgatory fans should head out to Amos’ Southend for Purgatory 40: Blitzkrieg Military Fetish Ball on Sat., Oct. 11. It appears time is running short for these fetish events. Don’t miss out.

Q&A: Ventriloquist Terry Fator

Ventriloquist Terry Fator really knows how to “throw” his voice. He made that clear on NBC’s America’s Got Talent - and he even won $1 million. His act features a variety of puppets that he uses to impersonate music stars like Garth Brooks, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Tony Bennett, Elvis, Nat King Cole and plenty more. And, he’s not even moving his lips. You can see him in action when he visits Charlotte for a performance at Belk Theater on Fri., Oct. 10. Read Creative Loafing’s interview with Terry Fator below.

Creative Loafing: You became interested in ventriloquism at an early age. Can you tell me a little about it and exactly how old you were when your interest began?
Terry Fator: Certainly. I was 10 years old, but a ventriloquist had come to my church when I was 8 years old and I hated him. He was terrible. Even at 8 years old I thought, ‘This guy is really bad at this.’ But it didn’t make me want to be a ventriloquist. When I was 10 years old I was browsing through the library and stumbled on a book about how to do ventriloquism and I thought, ‘Well, this looks like fun.’ I’d also never forgotten that bad ventriloquist when I was 8 years old, because I said ‘I never want to be like that. I always want to be really good if I’m going to do it.’ It only took me a couple of days to kind of get it down and I started saving up for a little puppet. I knew when I was 10 or 11 years old that I was going to do this as a career. There was never really anything else that I wanted to do. (more…)
