Bribery with sandwich

Iowa City Police said a 25-year-old man was charged with drunken driving early Sunday morning after a police officer observed him driving with his highlights off. While riding in the squad car with the police offer, the the man offered the officer a free sandwich if he allowed him to simply go home. The officer declined the man’s officer.

Well, obviously the officer declined. Come on, a sandwich? Doesn’t he know cops like donuts? Better luck next time.

Detroit Mayor Kilpatrick set to resign:
Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick pleaded guilty Thursday to charges stemming from a sex scandal, and is set to resign from office. Kilpatrick will serve four months in jail and has agreed not to run for public office during his five-year probation. He will also pay restitution of $1 million. The Wall Street Journal

Tropical Storm Hanna moves closer to Carolina coast:
Tropical Storm Hanna ripped through the Bahamas, while Hurricane Ike, a dangerous Category 4 hurricane moved further out in the Atlantic. Hanna was about 720 miles southeast of Wilmington, N.C., Thursday. The Boston Globe

Chloroform in Casey Anthony’s car:
Preliminary FBI lab results show traces of chloroform in Casey Anthony’s trunk. Chloroform is used to incapacitate victims during a crime. The confiscated computer of Casey Anthony, mother of murdered Caylee Anthony, also revealed search results for the chemical chloroform. CNN

Weeks to restore power to the Gulf Coast:

Days after Hurricane Gustav reach the Gulf Shore, about 829,000 households are still without power. Officials expect power to be restored slowly in the hardest-hit areas. Entergy says number of outages ranks second all-time, behind Hurricane Katrina. CNN

Shooting rampage leaves six people dead:
Isaac Zamora, 28, surrendered to police after allegedly shooting six people to death Tuesday. Among the dead were construction workers, motorists, and a sheriff’s deputy. Bodies were found at multiple crime scenes, according to the police. The suspect led police on a chase that reached speeds of 90 miles per hour. AP via CNN

Tropical Storm Hanna may hit United States:
Tropical Storm Hanna is expected to rip through the Bahamas, and make U.S. landfall by Friday or Saturday. Hanna is blamed for 23 deaths in Haiti. It is likely that Hanna will strengthen to a hurricane by the end of the week. Voice of America

U.S. District Dudge Samuel Kent is accused of abusive sexual contact with a subordinate.Houston Chronicle

Hearing on Detroit’s mayor begins:
A specialist in contract law testified Tuesday that a private confidentiality agreement was part of a settlement to protect Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his chief of staff. Michigan’s Gov. Jennifer Granholm heard testimony Wednesday to help her decide whether to remove Kilpatrick from office because of allegations of misconduct. AP via MSNBC

Hundreds to be charged after RNC protests:
Almost 300 people will be formally charged in Ramsey County District Court on Tuesday after they were arrested during protests at the Republican National Convention. Protestors broke windows, threw benches and vandalized police cars. Police say 130 of those arrested will be charged with felonies. The arrests came over nearly 5,000 protesters marched peacefully in St. Paul. Star Tribune

Strong probability Caylee is dead:
Lab tests confirmed a decomposing body had been in the trunk of a car driven by Casey Anthony, mother of three-year-old Caylee. Investigators believe there is a strong possibility that the child is dead. CNN via AP

Louisiana works to restore power:
Tropical Gustav left 1.4 million people in Louisiana without power on Tuesday evening. Evacuees are expected to be back into their homes as soon as Thursday, Mayor Nagin said. CNN

Gustav heads to Jamaica:
Tropical Storm Gustav is expected to strengthen to a hurricane late Thursday and pass close to Jamaica, reported the National Hurricane Center. Gustav’s wind is has now reached 70 miles per hour, killing at least 22 people along its path. CNN

Child killer sentenced to death:
Joseph Duncan III was sentenced to death Wednesday for the 2005 kidnapping, torture and murder of 9-year-old Dylan Groene. Duncan represented himself throughout the trial and put on no defense for the sentencing phase. He also killed four other member of the Groene family and kidnapped the two children. Duncan smiled as the verdict was passed to the judge.AP via MSNBC

Traces of human remains may be missing Florida toddler:
Investigators have found chemical evidence of human decomposition in the trunk of a car driven by the mother of missing 3-year-old Caylee Anthony. My Fox

Officials may evacuate in New Orleans:
With forecasters warning that a strengthening Gustav could slam into the Gulf of Mexico as a major hurricane, some New Orleans officials are speaking of plans to evacuate. AP via Yahoo News

Dalai Lama cancels world trip:
The Dalai Lama is suffering from exhaustion and has canceled his international travel for the next three weeks. His trips to Mexico and the Dominican Republic have been put on hold for now. “His holiness the Dalai Lama has been experiencing some discomfort in the past couple of days,” a statement on his Web site said. CNN

Fewer Americans lack health insurance:
The latest census shows that 45.7 million Americans were uninsured in 2007, down from 47 million in 2006. The decrease was a surprise, the number of uninsured Americans was expected to increase for the seventh straight year. NPR

Largest immigration raid in history:
The largest single workplace immigration raid in U.S. history has caused panics among many Hispanics families in Laurel, Miss., where federal agents rounded up about 600 plant workers suspected of being in the country illegally. About 100 of the 595 detained were released for humanitarian reasons. Many of the workers released were mothers who were fitted with electronic-monitoring bracelets and allowed to go home with their children. AP via FOX News

Hurricane Gustav to reach Category 3:
Eight people died in a landslide in the Dominican Republic Wednesday, raising Hurricane Gustav’s death toll to 11. More than 5,000 people across the country have been evacuated as a result of Gustav, which is expected to turn into a dangerous Category 3 hurricane in the next couple of days as it enters the Gulf of Mexico. A Brazilian woman said car thieves left her money instead of stealing her car after they realized it was in poor condition. The woman had left a note on the windshield stating the car was not worth stealing: “Mr Robber, please do not steal this car. It has no batteries, no spare tyre. It is in bad shape. Thank you for your attention.” You know you car is a piece of junk when thieves opt to leave money because they feel bad for you.

Possible Obama assassination plot:
The FBI is investigating possible claims of an assassination plot against Sen. Barack Obama, after four people were arrested near the Democratic Convention in Denver in possession of high-powered riffles. Aurora Police Department spokesman Marcus Dudley identified Tharin Gartrell 28, and Nathan Johnson as suspects in the plot. Fox News

Anthony wanted to give Caylee up for adoption:
Court documents show that Casey Anthony wanted to give the missing toddler up for adoption before she was born. Documents released by prosecutors says Caylee’s grandmother insisted that she keep the child. Caylee has been missing since June.CNN via AP

Dr. Dre’s son dead:
According to reports Dr. Dre’s son has died at the age of 20. The body of Andre Young Jr. was found in his Woodland Hills home Saturday morning, according to the Los Angeles Times. His mother came in to check on him around 10 a.m. and found him unresponsive. MTV News

Hurricane could delay shuttle launch:
The Hubble Telescope repair mission could be delayed by Hurricane Gustav, NASA officials said. The Space Shuttle Atlantis is supposed to roll out after midnight Saturday, but not if the recent bad weather comes anywhere near Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Gustav is a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 90 miles per hour. Hurricane Gustav is expect to reach a Category 2 quickly. ABC NEWS

70-year old shoplifter

In an attempt to resist arrest for shoplifting, a 70-year old man tried biting a police officer to avoid capture. The only problem was, he forgot his dentures at home. He was only able to leave a wet mark from his gums on the officers arm.

Flooding caused by the aftermath of Tropical Storm Fay prompted evacuations in parts of Northern Florida on Sunday. President Bush declared a “major disaster” in Florida, which made the counties of Brevard, Monroe, Okeechobee, and St. Lucie eligible for federal funds. Devil child-killer gets death recommendation:
A federal jury on Friday found Joseph Edward Duncan III eligible for the death penalty in the 2005 kidnapping, torture, and murder of 9-year old Dylan Groene. Duncan, who acted as his own attorney, put on no defense at the first phase of the penalty trial. Duncan killed four members of the Groene family. Duncan will have the opportunity this week to convince jurors to give him life in prison without the possibility of parole instead of a death sentence. AP via CNN

Clinton to release delegates to Obama:
Sen. Hillary Clinton will likely release her delegates to Sen. Barack Obama, a Democratic official said Sunday. The Democratic Party also decided delegates from Michigan and Florida will get full voting rights at the Democratic National Convention. AP via Fox News

Fatal Bacteria outbreak linked to meat:
Public officials in Canada said Saturday they have linked a deadly bacterial outbreak that killed four people to recalled meat products from Maple Leaf Foods. The latest outbreak has resulted in 21 confirmed cases of listeriosis. AP via MSNBC
