A step in the right direction?

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

It seems that Vice President Dick Cheney’s wife Lynne is finally out of her own little closet she created to never have to talk about her daughter Mary’s sexuality. In an interview with CBS to promote her new book, Lynne made some comments that stray far from her previous stance of either denying her daughter’s being a lesbian or refusing to speak about it.

Black eye for MTV’s ‘Green Crusade’

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

As a part of their “Green Crusade,” MTV airs odd, cult-like ads urging viewers to turn off their computers at night and avoid driving for a day. They, however, delivered a very different message to a Panamanian town this past summer. (more…)

Here come the waterworks

The McCain campaign is now very upset that Obama has made a “sexist remark” involving Sarah Palin. On Tuesday, Obama criticized the economic policies of McCain by saying, “You can put lipstick on a pig … it’s still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still going to stink after eight years,” according to this article.

Rage against the protestors

What fun would a Republican convention be without Rage Against the Machine? After missing 2004’s convention while off doing their own things, all four members of Rage have already showed up and addressed protesters around the RNC as shown here in this video. You don’t have to be a fan of theirs, though you may have to be a liberal, to enjoy this video of them talking to protesters and performing two songs acapella. It’s funny to see them up there acting almost boyish while they try to somehow play guitar and sing without guitars or microphones.

Is New Orleans ready 3 years later?

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

With Tropical Storm Gustav leaving Haiti Wednesday after killing16 there, and heading for the Gulf of Mexico, many people are worried that it could hit New Orleans, a city that is still staggering from the most infamous hurricane ever, Katrina. With the criticism of his predecessor Kathleen Blanco’s late response probably still fresh in his head, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has said that he could declare a state of emergency as early as Thursday and start evacuating New Orleans by Friday, three years to the day after Katrina decimated the city. Jindal is also ready to make 700 buses available for assisted evacuation if the threat persists.

Bush admin, Iraqi government looking in different directions

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Iraq Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is demanding changes to a draft deal on the status of U.S. forces beyond this year, according to an article released by Agence France-Presse Sunday. The thing that strikes me about this article is the obvious distortion between what members of the Iraqi government are saying about this deal and the sort of hazy ways the Bush administration is insisting nothing has been agreed upon yet. Iraq’s chief negotiator Mohammed al-Haj Hammoud has said that a 27-point deal regarding U.S. presence in Iraq has already been endorsed by George W. Bush. A White House spokesman later said that discussions were still ongoing. Hammoud also said that the deal provides for all U.S. combat troops to pull out of Iraqi cities by next June followed by a complete withdrawal from Iraq by 2011. White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe then called any deadlines in the deal “aspirational deadlines” rather than formal deadlines. (more…)
