Atlanta and Charlotte have two of the most hotly contested mayoral races in the country, but nobody’s paying attention. Too bad, because the role that race is playing in the outcome is major. While many people believe that the country has changed with the election of a Black president, some like me suggest that there may be a backlash, meted out on the local level. Let’s see what happens.

Let me just say that if you ever stand by and watch a young woman get gang-raped by multiple people and don’t do anything, you’re a fucked up individual who should burn in hell. I’m not trying to mince words at all. I don’t care if you’re a teenager or not a police officer, the failure to do something to stop this travesty gives the entire world a black eye.  I’m so tired of hearing all of the excuses, so please go somewhere and curl up and die.

Another model was fired allegedly for being a size 4. If this is true, this is yet another indicator of the ridiculous industry known as fashion. If a size 4 is fat then I guess that makes the average sized American woman (size 14) absurdly obese. It is a wonder to me why women continue to support an industry that lets us know at every opportunity that there is something wrong with us. We have to look like prepubescent boys or coat hangers in order to stay employed? Nothing feminine about that look at all.

It is a sad day indeed when a “robber” prays with a woman whom he is attempting to rob. When I first saw the footage, I thought it was crazy. After looking at it, I thought it was sad. This was clearly someone who was desperate and obviously not a robber — just at his wits end and conscious enough to know that what he was doing was wrong. This is a reflection of what many people are experiencing and the lengths that they are going to stay afloat during this time.

OK, so David Letterman was running around with 20-year-old girls for years, before he was married. Unfortunately, one of them hooked up with a crackpot who decided to blackmail one of America’s favorite late-night hosts. What is all of the hoopla about? It’s David Letterman. Are you kidding? Look at him. Hopefully he’s charming, because he’s not the finest man on the planet, so I’m not surprised that he was banging his co-workers. Why are you? What business is it of ours? He was being blackmailed, so isn’t he the victim?

President Barack Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize. For what exactly? He’s only been in office for a mere 9 months and is talking about sending more troops to Afghanistan. Did I hit my head on something? Talk about a set-up? This is worse than being nominated for an Oscar for your first film or performance. Marlee Mattlin or John Singleton, anyone? Things can only go downhill when there is no opportunity for one to grow. Some will see this as a victory. I see it as a farce in a world where people assign greatness in areas where people have yet to even tap their true potential.

I had the displeasure of attending a school function where Karl Rove was speaking. While I disagree philosophically on many points that Rove made, what was more interesting was the protesters that tried to talk over him. It was ridiculous. The cynic in me says that he is now able to see when zealots ruin places of real conversation, like a town hall meeting, by being boisterous, disruptive and bullies, but the realist in me really wanted to hear what he had to say — so it was rude and unnecessary. I will say this, whichever side of the aisle one belongs, the crazy energy in that room is enough to make me stay away from ANY politician in the very near future.

Surprise, surprise. I am also a Patrick Swayze fan. I loved him in the Outsiders, Red Dawn, Dirty Dancing, Ghost, City of Joy, and yes Point Break. Yes, I said it Point Break and whenever they show it in syndication I watch it. Why? Because Swayze’s characters are reflective of what I perceive him to be — a strong man, who does not give up, regardless of the odds against.  The spirit that allowed him to fight pancreatic cancer for 20 months, is the same spirit that informs his characters. He will be missed, but not forgotten.

No one should ever call the President of the United States a liar, especially during a live speech. S.C. Rep. Joe Wilson lost his mind yesterday when he did just that, which would have made sense if in fact he had said that to Gov. Sanford, Lt. Gov. Bauer and former Chair of the State Board of Education Kristin Maguire — all proven liars. The only difference is that they happen to be Republican and white. It is so sad when a Congressman can’t keep his racism in check.

Ted Kennedy died yesterday and I must say that I am sad. No, he was not perfect, but he was consistent. Luckily for many he did not become president but was allowed to work in the Senate, paving the way for the Voting Rights Act, Immigration Act of 1965 and the Anti-Apartheid Act, which called for sanctions against South Africa, pressuring the country to end it’s racist regime. He symbolized what a senator should be: a man who works hard for his constituents and the world community. Ted Kennedy was one in a million and his leadership in the Senate will be truly missed.
