I love coffee. Unless it’s very acidic. But I had no idea that people set up shop in Starbucks stores around Charlotte as if they were renting office space for the cost of a latte.

This morning I met with an interview subject at Starbucks and here are some of the things I overheard while waiting:

Blonde#1: “So, her husband went to jail in July and 25 days later she already had a boy toy. Then she asked me to be in the wedding and I told her that I didn’t believe in this marriage and I was in your first wedding. I’ll just be a guest.”

Blonde#2: “Sometimes, you and your friends just grow apart.”

Blonde#1: “My husband said he has lost all respect for her. And I asked him, when did you have any.”
It’s amazing to me that people leave their laptops sitting on tables and dash around the store as if we’re not in a recession. But what took the cake was the lady who walked outside to talk on her cell phone leaving her laptop and purse inside. Does she not realize that some people are so wrapped up in their latte and frappe that they don’t watch who comes and goes?

Zombies are about to invade Charlotte. Check out this message from the Charlotte Roller Girls:

Second Annual Charlotte Zombie Walk to take place October 5th

Zombie and Halloween enthusiasts throughout Charlotte to overtake the city!

Charlotte, North Carolina (ZOMBIES!) September 22, 2008: The second annual Charlotte Zombie Walk will take place Sunday, October 5th beginning at 7:00 PM.

Charlotte Zombie Walk is open to the public and participants are encouraged to don their zombie best for the event. The first annual Charlotte Zombie Walk boasted over 80 participants and served to promote Halloween related activities in metropolitan Charlotte.

The event will begin at Alley Cat in Uptown at 7:00 PM and the walk will end at the same location at 8:00 PM. Blood donations will be accepted outside Alley Cat from 2:30 to 7:00. The first annual Zombie Ball will follow the walk at 8:00. All ages are welcome to participate in the walk.

“Last year’s event was a lot of fun and we are looking for a bigger turn out this year” says Badger, the event organizer, “It’s good to have something for everyone that puts a bit of Halloween spirit into the city.”

The McGlohon Theatre in Spirit Square was almost filled to fire code capacity by poetry lovers and onlookers. The “Grand Slam Finals” poetry competition was held last Friday, April 18.  The lower level filled quickly, and late arrivals made the drudging hike to the balcony. The balcony has never been used during a SlamCharlotte competition, said Bluz, Slam Master.

The finals determine the members of the SlamCharlotte team, who represent the city in local, regional and national poetry competitions. The 2007 SlamCharlotte team took first place at the National Poetry Slam last year.

The top 12 poets with the highest scores from this year’s past slams placed in the finals. They were CP Maze, Filmore, Tavis Brunson, Q, BlackSwan, Ocean, Blaqbaree, Lovo, Norris Guest, Mike Simms, Carlos, and Starr.

Round one, all recited  passionate poems filled with content, body language and voice usage. Competition was fierce, and the passion the poets displayed on stage leaked into the audience as the crowd responded verbally to words and gestures of the poets. Roaring “Boos”echoed throughout the theater if a score of nine or less was given by random audience member judges (based on a 1 to 10 decimal point scale.) Q, Lovo, Ocean, Filmore, Norris and Tavis were eliminated.

Round two, six poets left waiting anxiously on the wall for their opportunity to unleash their words on the stage. These poems were even more meaningful and personal, referencing determination, child soldiers, devastating results on the minds and bodies of post Vietnam Vets, always blaming problems on “the man,” and broken relationships. Blaqbaree and CP Maze were eliminated.  “Clearly that was a devastating blow to some of you,” said Bluz, after the crowd realized Maze was gone.

Our 2008 SlamCharlotte team is Mike Simms, Swan, Carlos and Starr.

Round 3 was just for bragging rights and the 2008 “Grand Slam Champion” is Starr.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Mid-Atlantic Chapter, hosted the first of its 2008 Walk MS events on Saturday, March 29 at Symphony Park in Charlotte. Over 1,500 people showed up to walk and volunteer. All photos by Chey Scott.
