It’s roller derby time again! See the press release below.

Charlotte Roller Girls host “Shamrock Shenanigans” March 16th

The women’s flat track roller derby league will host New River Valley Roller Girls in their second home competition at Cricket Arena

Charlotte, North Carolina: March 3, 2008: Charlotte Roller Girls will host their second home competition at Cricket Arena Sunday, March 16, 2008. The league hosts the New River Valley Roller Girls from Virginia

Charlotte Roller Girls have themed this home competition Shamrock Shenanigans as the event will coincide with the Saint Patrick’s Day celebration.

Tickets for the event are currently on sale at Common Market, Cricket Arena Box Office and Ticketmaster. Doors will open at 4:00 PM Sunday March 16 and the bout is slated to begin at 5:00 PM

“Our fans are amazing”, says Rosie Cheeks, head of the Charlotte Roller Girls Bout Production Committee, “we were all so excited by the overwhelming support at our first bout and we look forward to having them out again.”

Charlotte Roller Girls will continue competition at home and throughout the country in 2008.

Unfortunately, I’m not going to be able to make it, but you definitely should. If you’re wondering what to expect, check out a previous post I wrote for their first bout. Good luck girls!

Is R. Kelly loose in the Q.C.?

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

Partiers at BackStage say that R. Kelly didn’t show up at Friday’s party. I wonder if anyone checked across the street at the skating rink?

Traffic Uptown was horrible, but what was even worse were those drivers who thought that you were supposed to let them in front of you. We’ve all been sitting in the same fucking traffic; why should I be nice when I’m tired, too?!

And big shouts to the Golden Bulls, the men and women made it to the finals of the CIAA basketball tournament.

It’s hard out here for a pimp

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Thursday night at the CIAA was a show. First of all, Floyd “Money” Mayweather, marched into Bobcats arena with nine dudes. Maybe it’s just me, but why does a man who knocks people the hell out for a living need so many security guards?

You expect to see Mr. CIAA dressed in loud and colorful suits. But on regular everyday dudes, well, it just looks like big pimping. There was a man in a hot pink suit, and he thought he looked good. I thought, it’s a little early for Easter, sir. And then there was the Bishop Don Juan wannabe in the burgandy fur coat. He even had a glittering gold tooth to go along with his outfit.

Check out the pictures.

CIAA: The calm before the storm

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Today, downtown Charlotte seems eerily quiet and calm.

Just think, in a few days Uptown will be mobbed by thousands of folks out to have good time at the basketball tournament or any of the dozens and dozens of parties going down this week.

That said, we at CL will be covering the whole thing with zeal. Tomorrow, check your local CL street box or stand for our latest issue; in it, we offer a guide to best stuff going down during  CIAA. Also, make sure you check the CLog frequently this week for regular coverage of the tournament and all related fun.

Lastly, we’re co-sponsoring a few parties  this week:

  • Wed., Feb. 27, we’re teaming up with The Sol Kitchen to bring back our much-loved Pop Life event for a one night stand. This event will feature art, film, free food, drink specials, cool people and the most eclectic blend of music in the whole damn city. And it’s FREE. It all pops off at Prevue, 2909 N. Davidson (in NoDa).
  •  Thursday we bring DJ BroRabb to Buckhead Saloon (201 E. 5th Street). Cover is $15 and it starts at 9 p.m.
  • Then on Friday, we’re joining forces with The Sol Kitchen again, to bring Biz Markie and friends to Charlotte’s best new nightclub, HOM (116 W. 5th St.). Visit www.thesolkitchen.com for more info.

At any rate, get ready. An ass-load of fun is only a few days away.

Oh, to be a derby girl

Monday, January 28th, 2008

I want to be a Charlotte Roller Girl.

While watching their inaugural bout against the Columbia Quad Squad last night at Cricket Arena, I could barely contain my excitement. I want to skate stealthily around a tight track like I know what I’m doing. I want a great sarcastic nickname. I want to be aggressive and push my opponents down, all in the name of roller derby.

I want to don purple stockings with holes in them. I want to wear a super short skirt, exposing underwear that reads “It Ain’t Gonna Lick Itself” on my ass and be called sexy.
Wait. You want to hear about the bout, don’t you.

Beards are beautiful

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

On Jan. 11, the finale for the Beards Because fundraiser was held at Amos’. For two months, men grew beards to raise money and awareness for the Battered Women’s Shelter of Charlotte. Here are a couple of photos from the trimming. (photos by Jeff Hahne)
