Music Menu: Eleisha Eagle, The Lee Boys

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Eleisha Eagle
Taking a chapter out of the Ben Folds piano-led pop songbook, Eagle’s songwriting is thoughtful, subtle and heartfelt. Her fluid piano-playing and voice puts to shame most overproduced, undertalented divas infesting the airwaves. Somber, jazzy, big city pop is the modus operandi here, where the songs get in your hair and muss it up a bit, in a good way. With Fernadina. The Evening Muse (Samir Shukla).

The Lee Boys
The Miami sextet, three Lee brothers and their nephews, drop infectious blues-gospel that’ll get even the most lethargic folks dancing in the aisles. Feel free to sashay, jump and even shout along with the energetic combo’s R&B, gospel, funk, rock and pedal steel country. The Boys’ music transcends boundaries and the multi-hued vibes bridge secular and spiritual worlds. Sure they’re a jam band, but with street cred that can only come from classic sweat-drenched black gospel. Double Door Inn (Shukla).

New Yeah Yeah Yeahs; Trent Kicks out the Jams

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have unveiled the new video for its next single, “Heads Will Roll,” off the newest album, It’s Blitz! The video, directed by Richard Ayoade, houses a rather silly allusion to a mash up of Michael Jackson’s videos for “Beat It” and “Thriller.” This stain of a video for a song I actually enjoyed before hand is why I try to avoid music videos these days.

Far more entertaining in my opinion, is the live clip of Trent Reznor and Street Sweeper Social Club covering MC5’s “Kick out the Jams.” Since Reznor announced his open recording policy on twitter and nin.com, there have been a host of exciting live scenes posted.

Checking out Chengdu

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Chengdu is the capital of the Sichuan province and it’s known for it’s laid-back life-style
and blazingly spicy food. I asked around about live music venues and was told to check out
The Little Bar (xiao jiu guan) which is known as the Chengdu home of Chinese punk.

After taking a harrowing taxi ride downtown (Chengdu drivers don’t pay attention to the lines, pedestrians or cyclists on the road) I arrived at the bar. It had a Snug Harbor vibe, but had a brighter atmosphere. The stage set-up was good, as was the sound system. The crowd wasn’t as diverse as that in Shanghai since Chengdu isn’t an international city. In fact, even though it’s the fourth largest city in China, before the big earthquake in Sichuan last year, not many westerners had even heard of Chengdu! (more…)

J. Wail Jonah Gabriel Lipsky, alter ego J. Wail, crafts trancey dance music where Kraftwerk meets contemporary electronica. Wail is a digital wizard no doubt, but the technology doesn’t overwhelm while loop pedals and live electronics add funk to the spacey vibes. There are plenty of beats, but don’t think of J Wail as a DJ as he’s got synthesizers and multiple instruments lending a hand. Silver Machine is also on the bill. Double Door Inn

Tonight’s gigs

Crank County Daredevils Sleaze rockers CCD are lost in the rock & roll jungle with nary a care to find their way out. The Asheville blokes merge punk, garage, and hard rock – the down and dirty Stooges and G N’ R type – that’s custom-made for drinking and debauchery. The guitar riffs are sloshed and hammered with abandon while the quartet has a grand time pounding eardrums. With the Poontanglers, Appalucia and The Bitterman. Snug Harbor (Samir Shukla)

Clang Quartet The brainchild of Scotty Irving (the former drummer for Geezer Lake, Eugene Chadbourne, Bunker and a number of others), Clang Quartet’s moniker is rather straightforward: think lots of improvisational drone/noise/percussion and performance art, all tied up with a semi-sorta-spiritualist twist. Which is nice, but don’t go expecting a kumbaya-like drum circle here – Clang Quartet sounds more akin to Rashied Ali and Tom Waits let loose in a chef supply store, only amplified. With Thrones, Grids, Projexorcism. Milestone (Timothy C. Davis)
