We all love free events, and even more so good, free events. That’s where Neighborhood Theatre and The Rat’s Nest come in. This Friday, – during NoDa’s Gallery Crawl – the music venue and the vintage shop located in the heart of NoDa partner together to present a free music night, dubbed “Rat’s Nest Harvest Hoedown.” Enjoy live performances by bands like Bill Noonan & the Barbed Wires, Brandon Kirkley, The Loose Lugnuts, and The Pistoleros — let’s just hope no actual rats are there. Free. Doors open at 8 p.m.; Show starts at 9 p.m.
We’re constantly posting information on Twitter with the #charlottemusic tag… and I’m personally sending out concert information and updates via my page there.
Tonight, Jewel is performing at the new Knight Theater in Uptown Charlotte. Want to win a pair of tickets? Simply send out a Tweet stating, “I want to win Jewel tickets!” and tag it with #charlottemusic. The first one to show up on the Music page’s Twitter feed wins.
Good luck!
(And stay tuned, I’ll be posting blogs and Twitter updates from the Voodoo Music Experience in New Orleans this weekend.)
The Pick Up The Phone Tour 2009, has been cancelled due to the hospitalization of Justin Furstenfeld, lead singer of the tour’s headlining band Blue October. The tour had a scheduled stop at The Fillmore on Oct. 23.
Furstenfeld is being treated for suffering from an extreme mental anxiety attack. His doctors have ordered that the tour — which was committed to reducing the stigma associated with mental health, depression, and suicide — be cancelled to allow for his recovery.
Tickets purchased for the Oct. 23 concert at The Fillmore Charlotte can be refunded at point of purchase starting Friday, Oct. 23. Tickets purchased via phone or online will be refunded automatically.
“Mental health diseases are unpredictable,” says Furstenfeld. “And on the eve of this tour in support of a cause that means the world to me, I am in need of time to heal from a setback in my own personal life, which is severe enough for me to seek hospitalization. I hope that my action to seek the strength and safety of treatment will inspire others that are suffering to do the same.”
Lenny Kravitz has canceled his upcoming show at the Fillmore on Oct. 27 due to a vocal injury. Refunds will be given at point of purchase.
Said Lenny Kravitz in a press release – “I’m very sorry and disappointed to not be able to pay my fans in North Carolina a visit. I was looking forward to returning to Charlotte and perform for everyone there. I look forward to coming back when I head back out on the road in the US next year.”
CL Music Editor Jeff Hahne chats with a couple members of the local band Heywire, who will be a part of a FREE event dubbed so cooly Project: Homebrew. This FREE event, to be held at Neighborhood Theatre on Oct. 1, is comprised of a panel discussing local music in Charlotte, as well as a concert of select artists from Jeff Hahne’s Homebrew Volume 3, a CD compilation of local music. And did we mention it’s FREE?
In the mood for a road trip this weekend? If so, I’d suggest hopping in your car and making the short drive (at the most, 4 hours away) to Atlanta to witness the historic reunion of Goodie Mob.
For the uninitiated, Goodie Mob is one of the South’s most influential hip-hop groups. Born and bred in the ATL, the group consists of members Khujo (Willie Knighton, Jr.), T-Mo Goodie (Robert Barnett), Big Gipp (Cameron Gipp) and Cee-Lo (Thomas Callaway) — who many may know as one half of the acclaimed band Gnarls Barkley (see members in above photo by Joeff Davis).
But before Cee-Lo hit the mainstream with Gnarls, he was down with Goodie Mob, cranking out conscious tunes with a Southern twist like “Soul Food,” “Cell Therapy” and “Black Ice,” among many other classics.
The group hasn’t officially been back together since 2002 — although they did a few surprise, one-off shows here and there over the years — so the show in Atlanta this weekend is a rare treat. Also, this is the “A” we’re talking about, where many celebs dwell, so expect to see some surprise guests.
For more on the show and the reunion, check out a big feature on the Atlanta edition of Creative Loafing’s site.
