Sad news for DMB fans

Saxophonist LeRoi Moore, a founding member of the Dave Matthews Band, has died from complications stemming from a recent ATV accident.

The accident happened before the band’s Charlotte show earlier this summer.

I’ll stick with beer…

Friday, August 15th, 2008

So, what’s your drink of choice?

I’ve always stuck with beer at bars and concerts - it’s cheaper than liquor.

It always amazes me how much Red Bull people drink. I’ve never tasted carbonated urine, but I’m guessing that’s a pretty close second in flavor to Red Bull. People consume the energy drink with vodka, via jaeger-bombs… with just about anything they have behind the bar.

Now, there’s a study that says drinking even one Red Bull may cause heart damage. Is drinking that horrid concoction worth the risk?

BlackFinn is open!

The EpiCentre has a country bar and an upscale lounge – and now, it has a sports bar-rant. It’s like a Fox and the Hound that serves seafood.

In the 10 minutes I was in there on Friday night’s soft opening, I heard 50 Cent, George Straight and AC/DC, which was more random than a mix tape.

There wasn’t necessarily a dance floor, but people were tossing their partners to and fro, doing some form of country swing dance. And surprisingly, I wasn’t even involved. (more…)

Rolling Stone undergoes change

Monday, August 11th, 2008

I got a trial issue in the mail not too long ago, and hoped it was just to get ideas and feedback… Oh well, I was wrong.

Rolling Stone magazine is going to change its size to be more in line with just about every other magazine out there.

It’s sad… Rolling Stone has always stuck out from the pack. Now, they’re going to look like everyone else.

Crowes vs. Wilson

Friday, August 1st, 2008

CMT.com has reported that the Black Crowes are looking at filing a copyright infringement suit against Gretchen Wilson. Wilson’s new song, “Work Hard, Play Harder” sounds an awful lot like the Crowes’ “Jealous Again.”

Compare them below…. What do you think?

There’s a CD brewing…

Monday, July 7th, 2008

We’re currently accepting submissions for the second edition of their CD series entitled, Creative Loafing presents Jeff Hahne’s Homebrew.

The 12-track CD, the Summer Stash 2008 edition, will be a collection of independently released music from the Charlotte area. Featuring a bit of every genre that’s heard around the Queen City, the artists featured will have released music in the first half of 2008.

Submissions should be sent to music editor Jeff Hahne via email or the U.S. postal service in the form of an mp3 or CD for consideration, by the end of July.

The next edition of the CD will once again be mastered by Rob Tavaglione for Catalyst Recording in Charlotte, N.C. It will be distributed at local music stores, at local concerts and at a CD release party that will be planned for August. More details on that, coming soon!

For more information, contact music editor Jeff Hahne at (704) 944-3608 or jeff.hahne@creativeloafing.com

Jay-Z can’t sing…

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Jay-Z headlined the Glastonbury festival this year and kicked off his set with a cover of Oasis’ “Wonderwall.”

It was a great idea and a jab at Noel Gallagher who was critical of the decision to have Jay-Z at the fest. However, while he may be the king of rap, it proved he’s not good at singing on key.

It goes into “99 Problems,” which offered a bit of AC/DC thrown into the mix.
