Thurston Moore on Jimmy Fallon — what’s that t-shirt?

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

This week’s episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon has sparked a lot of interest. Why? Because of the performance of Sonic Youth. Well, maybe not the performance, exactly, but more about singer Thurston Moore’s t-shirt.

You can try to see it here:

?uestlove has called it “the riskiest tshirt ive ever seen on broadcast tv….gangsta move son”

So, what was it? Answer after the jump. (more…)

Eminem meets Bruno at MTV Movie Awards

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Yeah, the clip speaks for itself… Doesn’t look like Eminem was happy. I guess he can make fun of celebrities, but doesn’t like to become the “butt” of jokes himself:

More thoughts on Idol

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

I really, really hate to say it, but Clay Aiken makes a good point about American Idol and Adam Lambert:

“The minute that Adam Lambert was singing ‘Ring of Fire’ … at that moment, [I] thought my ears would bleed. Contrived, awful, and slightly frightening! I wasn’t really a fan and found myself surprised whenever folks told me that they liked him.

“This year, there was an obvious bias. Not even having watched the show, I can tell you that I was WELL aware of the bias from the judges as to who should win. In my opinion, that is awfully unattractive. I don’t think I am alone.

“I think many voters got sick of being “told who to vote for”. I think many were turned off by the blatant favoritism shown towards one contestant. Therefore, on that last night, they used their votes against a contestant that they were tired of hearing about and for the contestant who had been written off.”

And this from Gene Simmons:

“Respectfully, I don’t think Adam is a rock singer,” Simmons writes. “He sounds much more convincing singing ballads and Broadway shows. His voice doesn’t seem to have a ‘rock quality.’ But, I’m sure he’s going to do just fine.”

The ad gurus

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

If you’re a hockey fan and have been following the 2009 NHL playoffs, you’ve probably seen the Versus ads featuring the music of Explosions in the Sky, the Austin-based instrumental rock quartet. If you’re like most, you probably didn’t know who the band was but simply thought “man, that was a kick ass commercial.”

The inspirational spot features the voice of some old, weathered coach contrasting the theories of evolution and competition over a spectacular video montage of sports highlights. Check out the full, unedited version below. The sampled track is “First Breath After Coma,” off Explosions’ 2003 release, The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place.

Rarely does a commercial give me chills, but this one does every time. (more…)

Kris Allen wins ‘Idol’

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

First off, let me thank whoever the woman was on the radio this morning that spoiled the finale of “American Idol” for me. Actually, it’s not that big of a deal, and kind of humorous.

My alarm went off this morning and it was timed perfectly to the morning’s headlines. As she rambled through the usual murder, politics and weather it was one line that caught my ear — “Kris Allen won ‘American Idol’ last night.” Gee, thanks. I was going to fast forward through the two-hour show during breakfast to see the reactions for myself and find out who won, but the lady spoiled it for me. Oh well…

So, how did Allen beat Adam Lambert? I’m guessing there were a handful of people that voted for Adam to lose more than for Kris to win. I’m guessing people who were fans of Danny Gokey pulled for Allen. I’m guessing, like me, people just had enough of “Screech Glambert.” (more…)
