USS New York built with recycled WTC steel

November 6, 2009 at 10:39 am by Katie M.

ussny_shipTalk about recycling with a purpose: The new Navy Ship, USS New York, came into New York harbor this week sporting more than just 361 crew members – contained in the ship is 7.5 tons of recycled steel from the World Trade Center.

The 25,000 behemoth was built in Virginia and is the length of two football fields. Written on the bow above its crest is written “Never Forget”. Built in Louisiana, it made its way into New York harbor earlier this week, performing a 21-gun salute in front of Ground Zero and docking until November 11 so that the public can climb aboard and get a firsthand glimpse of it.

The USS New York is just one of three ships built to commemorate the 9/11 attacks: the USS Arlington honors the victims of the attack on the Pentagon, and the USS Somerset was named for the county in Pennsylvania where United Airlines flight 93 crashed.

ussny_crestThirteen percent of the ship’s crew hails from New York, some of them enlisting because of the impact the WTC attacks had on them, like harbor pilot Neil Keating who requested to be assigned on the ship to honor his firefighter brother who was at Ground Zero when the towers fell.

Tiffany & Co. has set up a silver registry for the ship where people can purchase and have their name engraved on the official silver service to be used on the ship. Tiffany & Co.’s website states:

“The ship’s silver service is for use when hosting guests at home ports and wherever else she carries the American flag. For more than a century, Tiffany & Co. has created custom serving pieces for use on ceremonial and diplomatic occasions on U.S. Navy ships all over the world, and is pleased to continue this longstanding tradition with USS NEW YORK”
