Perhaps you’ve seen the recent televised propaganda commercials from the high fructose corn syrup lobby (aka the Corn Refiners Association). It turns out they might have reason to be nervous. In addition to the bad rap they’ve gotten in works like Michael Pollan’s Omnivore’s Dilemma — as well as a study showing mercury levels in their products — they now have to face the possibility of a pro-sugar marketing blitz.
“Starting April 20, Pepsi will sell cans of Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback, which will be made with real sugar instead of HFCS.”
After the jump is a YouTube parody of the HFCS ad.

Found on the web. Without context, I repost this photo to give you something to dream about this weekend - the bacon cheese pizza burger.
New Heights Magazine chimes in on the perennial debate about who has the best Cuban sandwich in Tampa. Find out who they picked after the jump.
Renowned cookbook author and Mexican cuisine authority Diana Kennedy will be at Seminole Heights’ favorite Mexican food diner — El Taconazo (affectionately known at the Taco Bus) — Friday, February 13. She’ll be signing books at 5:30 and teach a cooking class at 6:30.
I’m a huge fan of Kennedy’s. The first cookbook I ever owned was her The Art of Mexican Cooking, which is due for anew printing this March.
While she’s visiting Tampa she’ll also do a book signing at Inkwood Saturday the 14th and offer a cooking class at the Rolling Pin Kitchen in Brandon on Thursday the 12th. Her schedule is posted below.

Here’s a handy gadget for those interested in restaurant hygiene. Clean Scores provides a record of health inspection scores for local restaurants.
Taqueria Mi Mexico, for example, got a perfect score on their last inspection (but fared a little worse back in April).
It’s not perfect, there are several restaurants I searched for that it couldn’t find, but it might help tilt your decision about that sketchy corner dive that’s peaked your curiosity.
Craft Magazine and Make Magazine are tremendous periodicals for the 21st century DIY culture. And in true 21st century style their blogs are as important as their paper publications. Here’s the Craftzine blog, and here’s the Makezine blog.
I tell you this because they’re great zine/blogs and I thought you might be interested in them, but mostly to assuage my conscience since I’m about to totally rip off their image and post -
The most recent Government Accountability Office review (.pdf) notes that genetically engineered (aka GE, genetically modified or GM) food is getting into places where it doesn’t belong.
“Unauthorized releases of GE crops into food, animal feed, or the environment beyond farm fields have occurred, and it is likely that such incidents will occur again.”
So, what’s the big deal? Some genetically engineered foods reduce the need for pesticides and fertilizer, which should make them a darling of green-minded folk. Genetically modified crops can be a boon to developing countries that need more local, self-sustaining agriculture.
And really, isn’t cross-breeding just modifying the genetics of a crop old school style? (Several of these arguments can be found at the Monsanto corporate responsibility page.)

The Trib’s Tampa Bay Online is reporting the construction of a CineBistro theater in Hyde Park Village.
“Cobb Theatres plans to begin construction in January of a CineBistro theater that will have six screens, reserved seating and dining tables. Cocktails and appetizers will be available in the lobby bar. Patrons will be able to order a meal that will be served at the table before the movie starts.”
Metromix Tampa Bay has a lot of images of the CineBistro in Wesley Chapel if you have a hankering to learn more.
And, a few days ago a Charley’s World segment on MyFox Tampa Bay included an interview with CineBistro Executive Chef Mike Outlaw. Mike offers up his recipe for CineMac, the Bistro’s version of mac & cheese. It looks delicious.
Here’s the official CineBistro press release about the opening.
