Mini macaca moment

From today’s Albany Herald:

Take the Aug. 31 comments that state Rep. Winfred Dukes, D-Albany, made to graduates of the Turner Job Corps Center.

In an apparent effort to reference the log-cabin beginnings politicians are so fond of citing in an effort to come across as a regular person, Dukes noted that he was raised in a family of 15 who resided in a four-bedroom house.

“We were kind of like Mexicans,” Dukes quipped.

Good one, Winfred.

A quick GooTube search for video of Dukes’ mini macaca moment didn’t turn up any footage of the quip.

My search did, however, reveal that Dukes is listed as an honorary member of the American Association for Single People.

AASP describes itself as “a group of people who believe that the promise of equality applies to everyone regardless of marital status.”

It even has a patriotic logo:

Back to Dukes’ quip ...

His comments were unfortunate, certainly, but I can’t be too hard on the guy. After all, I accidentally offended at least two Mongolian readers with a joke in my Don’t Panic column this week.
