Meech pleads guilty

DETROIT — After spending two years awaiting trial, Demetrius “Big Meech†Flenory pleaded guilty Nov. 19 to laundering drug money and running a continuing criminal enterprise. His plea ended a 15-year investigation into his role in the $270 million multistate cocaine ring the Black Mafia Family.
Meech, a 39-year-old hip-hop entrepreneur and Detroit native who ran BMF’s Atlanta hub, stood with his hands clasped behind his back and admitted to U.S. District Court Judge Avern Cohn that he “supervised†the drug ring. (BMF was the subject of a three-part series published by CL last year.)
“I was the leader of a few individuals that was involved in this case,†he told Cohn in a low, soft voice.
While a conviction on a continuing criminal enterprise charge carries a mandatory life sentence, Meech’s guilty plea means he could face as little as 20 years. A sentencing date wasn’t set.
The plea deal didn’t include a cooperation agreement, meaning he won’t be called to testify against his remaining co-defendants, including his brother, alleged BMF co-leader Terry “Southwest T†Flenory.
Only the Flenory brothers were charged under the continuing enterprise statute. BMF’s second-in-command, Chad “J-Bo†Brown, pleaded guilty in April to cocaine and money laundering; he was sentenced last week to 15 years in prison. Brown’s is the most stringent of any sentence handed down in the case so far. Like Meech, Brown refused to sign a cooperation agreement, which would have landed him a reduced sentence.
Meech is the 26th defendant to plead guilty in an indictment that charged 41 alleged co-conspirators. His brother and five other co-defendants are scheduled for trial Nov. 26. The remaining co-defendants are expected to plead guilty at a later date.
At a separate hearing held hours before Meech’s plea, Cohn discussed the upcoming trial with prosecutors and defense. One of the issues defense attorneys raised is the government’s intent to keep some of its witnesses secret. Terry’s attorney, William Daniel, asked if the identities of three of those witnesses would be revealed. Assistant U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison replied that she would identify them a week before their scheduled testimony in the trial, which is expected to last six weeks.
“It may be that you should re-examine that,†the judge said.
Soon after, Ison pointed out that most of the witnesses already had been identified in a document shared with defense attorneys. “There’s a veritable wealth of witnesses already included on the government’s list,†she said.
Only three of the co-defendants who’ve pleaded guilty have agreed to cooperate. In addition, at least three others who haven’t pleaded guilty are expected to cooperate. And BMF associates charged in other jurisdictions, including Atlanta, cut deals in exchange for testimony, too.
To date, more than 150 alleged BMF associates have been charged in more than a dozen indictments in at least seven states. Two of those cases were brought by the U.S. attorney’s office in Atlanta, and one is in its early stages. Among those charged in that indictment is the rapper Barima “Bleu DaVinci†McKnight, and BMF’s alleged third-in-command, Fleming “Ill†Daniels. Daniels also faces a murder charge out of Fulton County.
BMF associates have been arrested in connection with at least three violent attacks in Atlanta, including the 2004 shooting in the parking lot of a Midtown club with which Daniels is charged. That case has not yet been scheduled for trial.
What’s more, Mayor Shirley Franklin’s ex-son-in-law, who was sentenced last year to life in prison for cocaine charges related to BMF, is under investigation for his alleged role in the murder of his co-defendant and the co-defendant’s girlfriend. The mayor’s daughter is also being investigated for what she might have known about her then-husband’s cocaine ring.

Mara you have been very thorough in coving this story but in your callous efforts to get your name out there you have been incredibly irresposible to the efforts being put forth by each individual who is taking there life into their own hands by agreeing to cooperate with the government. You seem to glorify Meech and all he has done and crucify the people who are trying to do the right thing. Have you ever stopped to consider that these witnesses have families and all you have done is escalate a situation in the streets for these people. Meech is a grown man and made penitentuary moves while in the street and did what he wanted to do. I recall him saying how if he was to die tomorrow it would be alright, cause there is nothing he hasn’t done. He had a good run, now its time to pay back the government. He’s a smart man, he knew any way you sliced it, he was going to do time, but instead of rolling the dice and getting life, he accepted the charge he was hit with agreed on a number so he could start his time and be back on the street by the time he is 58. At the same time, the people who have agreed to cooperate are doing the same thing. Doing what they have to do so they can get home to their families. That is what’s truly important….your family not the money you tried to get cause eventually it gets spent.

It appears that many are mistaking the concept of taking a plea and cooperating. They are two entirely different things. You can take a plea and not dishonor the code by cooperating. So I am quite sure Meech still believes in Death Before Dishonor. The reason he took a plea is because he is smart. The government has a 95% conviction rate the sentence he faced was LIFE in prison. Rather then tell on his associates he decided to face his punishment and get on with it.
Keep in mind as Mara has so thoroughly reported 95% of all the evidence in this case was against Terry, however they would not give Meech a trial separation- he knew the jury would see no difference between him and his brother and in order to create that difference in their minds his lawyers would have had to put the blame on Terry to create a doubt in their mind about Meech and evidently this was not something that Meech was willing to do- after all whether they were speaking or not they still have the same mother.
Taking a plea was the most honorable thing Meech could have done at this point. All that matters is he didn’t cooperate- Death before dishonor doesn’t mean you have to go out in a blaze or rot in jail for the rest of your life- it means don’t cooperate and taking a plea is not cooperating it is being smart.
And as far as him getting what he deserves- I won’t even go there but I will tell you all this:
I’d rather live in a neighborhood with a bunch of Meechs then most people- who lack character and integrity. He lived a lifestyle that many would not agree with and yes he promoted it to the very end but if it wasn’t him it would be someone else; the government has set it up that way. So while some of you are out their judging this man for his actions your time would be better spent taking a better look at your society and government and trying to figure out why we keep allowing them to set up circumstances that create individuals like Meech.

Firstly……thank you SAYWORD for being so real about what it really is. And for those who don’t truly know the truth about the situation, the only reason why it APPEARS that most of the evidence is against T is because the FEDS only grabbed the “263″ half of the family. BMF is still on the street! That is why Meech could honestly say he “supervised” only a few people that were apprehended. Like I said earlier, he is a smart individual and while still saving face, he’s doing what he has to do to come home to his family.
The one I feel bad for thru all of this is “FAT-BOY”, because he honestly was trying to get out the game and because of the flashy lifestyle his brother had drew alot of unnecessary attention to the family and the government seems to believe that they have broken down BMF….. but they have yet to touch the tip of the ice-berg.

Your little scenario would be plausible if it was regarding any one else besides Meech. the government may have had a few people on this case stone cold but it wasn’t meech. the government doesn’t offer high profile people like Meech deals when they have a sure case against them. And if Meech would have cooperated they would have reported it on every news cast they could just to remind “niggas” to stay in their place. I never said the gov offered a plea, I said they may have accepted HIS offer in exchange for HIS info. If you were the FBI or DEA and Meech said “I’ll give you my supplier if you take him out later and make it look like someone else gave him up. You give me 25 to make it look like I didn’t flip, but stood my ground as a real soldier. It’s a WIN-WIN”.

You know before you can blame anybody about the drugs in this country, blame the government b/c they started all the problems with drugs being introduced to our communities. No drugs were ever brought into this country until our government flooded watts to try and get rid of the black panter party.
What ever happened to the DEA when they brought all thise drugs into Miami 15 yrs ago. Why is it that we try and put blame on people that we know nothing about. Our government is the biggest crime family and they set all the rules and if you don’t play by their rules, guess what they take you out. Think about it people drugs can’t get into this country if our government didn’t allow it. Meech clearly took the smart road out on this one. At the end of it all it would have ended up being a gamble on his behalf. Im pretty sure in his mind it was either fess up now and get the lowest scetence possible or take it to trial which would have allowed FED\\\’s and other investigators to continue their investigations on the murders they were trying to pin against him and the chance to build on the little evidence that they did have on him. Tito and Throwback both pleaded guilty in Detroit, Tito in July and Throwback in November. Neither has been sentenced, and they did not sign cooperation agreements. Tito faces 87 to 108 months and Throwback 121 to 151 months.
Also, both were charged in the BMF indictment that came out of L.A. last month.

We all know that it only takes 1 jive ass person to get into trouble, become feeble, and tell the government whatever they want to hear, even if its not true. I don’t agree with pleading out because whatever amount of time you are sentenced to you have to accept, but if you go to trial and are found guilty you can always get back in court on and appeal and continue fighting. If a person is somewhat wise they’ll know that the government is the #1 enemy of blacks in America. STOP VIEWING THE WORLD THROUGH WHITE FOLKS LENSES!

Malik - I think the true challenge is being honroable and positive by resisting the temptations of easy money from crime. It is much harder to do it legally.
The government is the # 1 enemy? The government operates taxpayer provider services like free education, subsidized food, housing, transportation, jobs, training, etc etc You are absolutley right, they are out to get you.
The government is not the #1 enemy of honest and decent people. It isn’t even the #1 enemy of criminals. Based on what I see in my neighborhood, other criminals are the #1 enemy. That is especially tru of the honest and decent black people who live in our neighborhoods.

I’m not going to give a long lecture on Big Meech and Bmf! I will however say this look at their outcome and use your own better judgment. I dont wish ill will on anyone, least of all someone who has done nothing to me or my family.However we all know that selling drugs in this country is considered illegal.if you choose to do it, you do so knowing what your risk is. He lived a life that many of you obviously have only dreamed of,but it came at a cost when all was said and done! If he approcahes creating and running a legal business with the same drive and motivation that he ran an illegal business he could be quite powerful ,easily on the level of guys such as Russel Simmons,etc etc! Yes the government knows that drugs are being brought into this country . Someone is turning a blind eye ,or particpating at some level higher than usa drug lords,dealers.
