Stuff White People Like
February 18, 2008 at 12:24 pm by Andisheh Nouraee in BlogrollStuff White People Like is a fantastic blog that pokes fun at the social and consumption habits of affluent, white yuppies and hipsters.
Over the years, white people have gone through a number of official cars. In the 1980s it was the Saab and the Volvo. By the 1990s it was the Volkswagen Jetta or a Subaru 4WD station wagon. But these days, there is only one car for white people. One car that defines all that they love: the Toyota Prius.
Like Homer Simpson once said, it’s funny ’cause it’s true.
Other stuff white people like: recycling, standing still at concerts, the Sunday New York Times, David Sedaris, awareness and expensive sandwiches.

Who is David Sedaris ??
Does it mean you are not going to test drive the Prius??.

I think the Jetta is still an in car.
Wait for the new TDI version.
That will give the Prius a good run for its money.

I pored through the entries to search for the item that would make me say, “AH-HA! This is not funny!†But, it actually is. It is not the cookie cutter jokes used by comedians to differentiate brown v. white. It is more about culture, consumerism, and the trappings one embraces in their search of the perfect world. You could pull the white reference in each listing and most would stand alone as funny as they are an observations of society at large, but most are about class differences – say like expensive sandwiches, know what’s best for poor people, drive a Prius, etcetera. Therein lies some discomfort, but that is noted in no. 55.
I happen to like EVERY item listed, so I am the standard white guy according to this writer. I did, however, connect to no. 66 about avoiding large groups of white people at new ethnic restaurants I have yet to explore, as I feel as if the authenticity is not genuine if so many people find the place agreeable to their palate. That is what Ryan’s Steakhouse and Old Country Buffets are for. When I peer inside the window of a yet unexplored Buford Highway restaurant I want to feel a little danger and experience of the unknown and road less traveled.
The feature shortcoming of this blog is that the writer makes it a race issue by noting that white people are the only ones capable of living frivolously and having expensive taste. Better name would be, “Stuff Contemporary Yuppies Like.â€
