MARTA mugging victim fights back … now on YouTube
February 6, 2009 at 1:59 pm by Thomas Wheatley in NewsFirst there was “Soulja Girl.” Now, meet “mugging gone wrong.”
A video in which a young man in a MARTA station appears to turn the tables on a would-be mugger is the latest slice of drama to hit YouTube. Early in the morning on May 3, 2008, a station security camera captured the following footage (I’ve loaded the victim’s video of the event, which includes his comments):
After the jump, some details about the video.
According to a MARTA spokeswoman, transit police received a call from the victim several hours after the incident. She says they were able to arrest the suspect by the end of the day. UPDATE: According to the Fulton County District Attorney’s office, the would-be mugger was sentenced on Feb. 4 to 10 years in prison and 10 years probation. As part of his sentencing, he must serve the full sentence. He will be released on May 3, 2018. Upon his release, he will be prohibited from loitering in MARTA stations. The other man in the video who approached the mugging victim after the scuffle has not been apprehended.
CL has contacted the young man who appears in the video, who asked not to be identified. The young man, who says he suffered some scraps and bruises from the scuffle, says he was on his way to the airport to start his summer break from school. MARTA, he says, is his only mode of transportation and that he’s used the transit system since the incident. He says he originally posted the clip just to share with friends. Since then, however, it’s been posted on message boards and sent via e-mail and started to go viral.

Yes!!!

That choke hold is indefensible if used right. I saw a friend of mine who is about 5′7″ 150lbs put it on a georgia tech o-lineman once at a party a few years ago. The o-lineman went to sleep just like this guy did.

Speaking of GT…that’s the North Avenue MARTA station, which makes that kid a GT student (since GSU quit using the dorms over there last year).
Equally strange: the captcha required of me to post this? edu!

good for that student.
its a shame that he was put in that position but he handled it well.
now if only the posters on the bmf rapper blog would show this video to their friends, maybe it would happen less often.

The Marta police must have been “cooping” at the time.

So, my comment was deleted. Should I be proud that I finally offended someone enough at CL to have a post deleted? Or was it my profanity? I thought profanity was okay here, or is it just when the thugs use it in their endless debates about BMF and Poop Doody?

i didn’t see the deleted comment.
what did u say?

Oh, just how happy I was to see that video and that thugs are usually in groups and/or armed because when they’re alone things like this can happen and they’re generally not so tough. Also said the guy should have thrown that piece of sh*t on the rail tracks so the taxpayers wouldn’t have to take care of him for the next ten years.

as awesome as it is that this guy handled the situation, it also really pisses me off that there were no cops there to help but if I try to rollerblade at that marta station (north ave marta) i get kicked out immediately and threatened to be arrested.
GET YOUR PRIORITIES STRAIGHT

Jamie – the cops were outside busting you for blading, instead of inside preventingthsi crime :-)
