Atlanta sustainable ordinance faces crucial vote (UPDATE)

City Council debates measure that proponents say would help save water, reduce energy

We’ve got our eyes fixed on the Atlanta City Council’s committee hearing about the proposed Sustainable Building Ordinance.

Proponents say the measure would help conserve water, reduce energy, and make the city more “green.” But critics, primarily in the development community, have said it should be voluntary and include financial incentives. An amendment that would make the ordinance voluntary was introduced yesterday. That move was met with disapproval by environmentalist groups.

If you’d like to watch the hearing online, tune in by clicking here. (The feed sometimes doesn’t load. Give it a couple of tries.) We’ll update once the committee votes on the measure.

UPDATED 4:04 p.m.: The committee approved the ordinance — without the controversial amendment. It now moves to full Council where it could face a vote as early as Monday.
